THURSDAY, MAY 3,1979 Candidates Night Well Attended AVALON — An overflow crowd of several hundred persons thronged the Avalon Community Center Tuesday night to hear 16 candidates for the May 8 mayor-council race present brief platforms. The candidates, strictly limited to three minutes speaking time agreed on support of such issues as dune and beach preservation, expansion of recreational activities, and maintaining the family resort character of Avalon. , Council candidate Mary Grace Keen drew strong applause when she vowed to introduce a group rental ordinance if elected. Several candidates devoted their brief speeches to attacks on the administration of incumbent mayor Ellsworth Armacost. Speaking at the Candidate’s Night sponsored by the Avalon Chamber of Commerce were: Mayor Ellsworth Armacost, Owen Quinn, Tom White (candidate for mayor), Jane Ann Cunningham, Rachel Sloan, James Busha, Otho L. Sommers, Lawrence T. Clark. Ralph M Wilson, Philip Judyski, Mary Grace Keen. Jeanette L. Glazier, William King, Pauline C. Patricia, Raymond S. Gray, Jr. and Marjorie L. Zook. Five council seats are open under the new council-mayor form of government. Horse Show COURT HOUSE - Cape May County Riding Club will hold its Spring Western Horse Show Saturday. AVALON - The Cape May County Unit of the American Cancer Society last week announced.their plans for the Eighth Annual Champagne Fling to be held May 20 at the Golden Inn, Avalon. Over $14,800 was raised last year for the local unit* the second largest cancer fund raising event io the state. Festivities are planned from 1 to 5 p.m. Tickets are $12.50 . per person. A limited number of patron tickets are still available. Hosts for this very special event will be Mr. and Mrs. Robert Golden who have graciously made the facilities of the Golden Inn available for the past seven years. Marc Howard of WPVJTV Action News and Don Fair, will emcee the program. Music will be provided by Frank Williams. The auction committee is planning some fantastic items this year. Weekends in New York, the Latham Hotel in Philadelphia, skiing at the Playboy Club/ and Great Gorge will be a j few of the unusual items put on the block.
