Energy Plan Changes

WASGHINTON, D C. - In the wake of Congressional setbacks to President Carter's energy conservation plans. Rep. Bill Hughes (D-NJ) has called upon the Administration to develop a plan which does not depend solely upon weekend gasoline station closings. In a letter to Carter. Hughes said that recent rejection of the weekend gas ban i by the House Commerce Committee was based on the feeling that the plan might not work and would require the tourist and travel industries to absorb the entire brunt of a severe energy shortage. Hughes said that a better approach would be to allow each state to devise its own energy savings plan based

upon nationally determined conservation goals. “Forcing one industry to bear the entire hardship of an energy shortage is not only unfair, but contrary to the clear intent of the law." Hughes wrote. “Bankruptcies and widespread unemployment in tourist-dependent areas would, in effect, be subsidizing the economic survival of other regions and sectors of the economy. “There will be no painless way to deal with a major energy shortage.” Hughes said, "but we use our ingenuity and imagination to reduce energy consumption ' wherever possible, and not concentrate on only one sector of the economy." .
