Food Stamp Requirements

RIO GRANDE Food Stamps help households buy the food they need for good health. They also help local communities by increasing the sales pf people who grow, distribute and sell food. The new Food Stamp Program implemented Jan. 1. 1979 allows eligible households to receive free coupons which add buying power lo their own food budgets. The basic eligibility requirements are the same everywhere. "You may be eligible if you work for low wages, are unemployed, or work part time, are elderly or disabled and live on a small income Other requirements that must be met are: work registration for persons between 18 and GO. with certain exceptions; citizenship or legal alien .status, and resources. To apply, an application must be filed and an interview conducted by your local Food Stamp office. You can pick up an application at the office. Till it out. and turn it in the same day. Or you may ask for one over the phone and the office will mail il lo you on the same day. Applications should be turned in as soon as possible because if you

qualify, you will get Food Stamps within 30 days of the day the office receives your completed application. , If you cannot get to the office, you can contact the Transportation Services by* calling 72*9000 ext 248 or you may qualify for Fare Free Transportation at 88G 2011 When you go for your interview, you must bring proof of all income, such as pay *stubs or employer's written statements of gross weekly pay; benefit letters from Social Security. SSI. VA. pension or unAn ployment. The office will also need statements of checking and savings accounts and bills for rent or mortgage, utilities, insurance on your house, property taxes, water, sewer and child care. The amount of Food Stamps you receive is based on household size and income after dcduc lions. Food Stamps can be used at most supermarkets for any edible product.
