When things break open, they happen all at once on the Jersey Cape. Within a day or two of each other, black drum, weakfish and blueflsh all made dramatic appearances and anglers who have been able to fish have been producing excellent catches. Not only have weakies started iif the bay, they are also hitting on the jetties. And from all indications, it will be an interesting spring season. Drum and weaks are both coming in with a regularity which speaks well for the days ahead and while the catches are not of blitz proportions, they are good enough to be good tidings for the next few •weeks -if the Weather gives us any help at all. As the weakfish-dm mfish season progresses we will see a dramatic pickup in fish catches. Anglers are reminded that last year’s best efforts came on, bucktail-worm combinations. And since the fish hit at various levels, different weights of bucktails are needed to get the lures down to the fish. Remember, too, that the tide can affect the weight of the bucktail you need. Stronger tides require heavier lures and as the tide starts to run harder, switch to bigger bucktail. As for worm colors, we have had anglers Swear by

every color of worm which was ever made as being the really best ‘killer’ but we believe in taking an assortment. Fish hit different colors better on different days. We know of several anglers who buy three or four colors of worms and mip them with white worms to make mottled, blotchy colon since the worm colors do bleed. These anglers swear that the mottle colon catch more fish, so who can tell. Take along an assortment and don’t be afraid to try them all. Sevenevans Mariana Contest: The leader thus far in the Sevenevans Marina's annual weakfish contest (grand prize $1,000) is BiM Taht of Voorhees, NJ with a 9 lb. 12-oz. sea trout. Bill also has an armlock on third place with a seven-lb. -weakie while Ken Weeber of Lawrence Harbour, NJ is in the runnerup spot with a 94b. loz. weakfish. Crabs Here Early: A surprisingly early run of big blueclaw crabs ih'the backwaters and the Inland Waterway is pleasing crab fanciers. James Beljamy of Whitesboro got cooler box full while trapping near the North Wildwood Boulevard last TTiursday.
