More Bus Use For Elderly
Wildwood - New Jersey Senaior James S Cafiero Iasi week reported he, has co-sponsored legislation to permit the use of school buses for the transportation of senior citizens groups throughout a wider area than just their immediate school district The amendment tkould allow school hoards to permit senior Citizens groups to use buses throughout their county or a contiguous county. Cafiero explained lhal the original restriction mandating use of the school buses for seniors only wit ting I heir own school district is un necessary since local school boards have a wide latitude to determine how buses will be used consistent with guidelines established by the State Board of Education. The Senator emphasized that such use o! the school buses for trans|»orting senior citizens shall not interfere with the transportation of school pupils and that buses so used will be operated only . bylicensed bus driver Senior citizens groups seeking to use school bases would be required, if necessary, to pay all or part of any costs incurred by the district in permitting such use. including but not limited to the costs of fuel, driver salaries.
insurance and depreciation. Cafiero explained that many scjmol districts own ’or lease buses that sit idle a good part of the day. "These could be effectively used to transport ,senior citizens to area shopping centers and public buildings to supplement
that service already provided by existing senior citizens bus programs "By providing for wider use of school buses, districts would ix- ex lending the range of travel formany senior citizens indTridually .and a§ groups." Senator. Vafiern concluded
