by Cheryl Trews The surfaces of things may not be superficial at all. but rather reveal a great deal An object presents itself visually with all its elements combined into a single impact. Conditions vary; a dominant condition overwhelms the others, as when a diamond catches the light When a grand moment such as this occurs. our ‘attention is captured, and we are dazzled if only for a .split second. Other involvement with viewing is more subtle as we nurture our looking with time It is through the developing of this aspect of our nature that we cultivate also th? condition for seeing beauty. One may study the grain of wood and see rhythms that growth and life have created, or notice the delicate variations of browns and greys One may sense the warmth of wood or even remember the tree Consider the difference between a weathered piece of driftwood and a varnished mahogany table leg. The high gloss finish on the leg can accentuate the underlying grain, or when light strikes on an angle, will act as a reflective surface picking up whatever color and shape surround and face it The smoothest finish has the most reflective quality, but every surface reflects to some degree with the exception of soft-textured

must also be shown. *Local color refers to the base color of the subject, as it appears in a general sense. A lemon may have rich purple in its shadow.areas or a pinkish highlight where it faces the lamp, but its local hue is yellow, and this must appear to pervade the entire object. At present, before me is this visual phenomenon in dramatic form: A blue glass bottle rests on the wood floor. Sunlight passing through the glass projects blue onto the floor. As an artist. I am delighted and challenged by this incident. I consider that the bottle is reflecting the floor The bottle contains the brown of the floor and the patterns that play upon it. I ask myself. "How blue is the floor; how brown is the bottle?" I notice another condition: the flatness of the floor as compared with the roundness of the bottle. The floor on the bottle is as round as the bottle. The spot on the floor is flat on the floor. And so another painting begins...
