Hotline Allays Fears COURT HOUSE - The energy crisis caused little trouble in Cape May County over the Memdrial Day weekend with a gasoline hotline available 24 hours to troubleshoot problem areas and allay motorist fears. AVALON — Memorial Day 1$79 was commemorated by the citizens of Avalon with a 9 a m Parade down Dune Drive from 30th Street to the 21st Street arete. Bv Liz Woods N WILDWOOD When Jane Ha verst ick Ecchevarria was growing up in Ventnor she used to run along the beaches, smashing shells underfoot. Nowadays! an amateur shcllcr. she is apt to carry along a bucket and shovel on Nr beach walks to use when she spots interesting specimens. One of about 100 members (if the Jersey Cape Shell Club, she has become an avid shelter in jusl a few years time since a friend gifted Mrs Ecchevarria and her husband Albert with a membership in the shell club. The Ec chevarria‘s went to their firsi meeting at the Wetlands Institute in Stone Harbor more for social purposes than to discover a new hobby »-The Ecchevarria's. of North Wildwood, both retired, couldn't have cared less about shell collecting at that lime. Instead, "it has opened up a whole new world for us." Mrs., Ecchevarria Said "I used to pooh-pooh shelling. When friends would bring back shells from Florida I'd be polite, but very uninterested.” Since that initial meeting. Mrs Ecchevarria has attOndtd many tec lures and has gone on countless shelling trips She has a growing collection that includes a number of fossil shells, black shells < such as conch and scallops, found locally > and jingles, which are small shiny shells.

The Jersey Cape Shell Club was founded in May1964 by Mrs Harriet Hickman' and Mrs. June Daw-ley That August the club held its first shell exhibit This coming August, the 23rd through the 26th. the Club will hold still another exhibit at the Wetlands Institute. It will be conducted 9 a m.-9 p.m. on the 23rd. 24th and 25th. and It am. until 6 p.m. on Saturday, the final day. All meetings of the shell club are held the first Monday of the month at It p.m at the Wetlands "The club is especially trying to get young people interested in shell collecting Our president Jay B Sessoms has written to the local schools to at tract youngsters to our lectures and expeditions " i Interested people car call Mrs Hickman at 398-6491 > Many people of note come down to the Wetlands, bringing along films and slides.
