(From Pagel) Drive was led by two men from the Consortium in Palermo who dove off the rocks and brought up sealife they found around the jetties and rocks. Then members of the club traveled to Palermo to view specimens under the microscope "We looked at sea urchins." Mrs. Ecchevarria said. During another trip, last autumn, shell dub members went in search of worm life found behind the Wetlands Institute, then trooped back to the Institute to hear a lecture about them. On her own, Mrs. Ecchevarria likes to look for shells from dumps alongside of fishing boats. "They're hard to find," she said. "They come from northern waters. When scallops are dredged these things tome up They are so scarce now I’m no longer able to find them." Mrs Ecchevarria. a graduate of Atlantic City High School, went to Syracuse University before going to New York City "to seek my fortune". She became an artist with United Features Syndicate and did "comic book type things ”. While in New York she met her husband, an engineering draftsman The Ecchevarria’s eventually settled in North Wildwood Mrs Ecchevarria became a reporter with a lo^al daily and later was probation officer for all females in Cape May County. As her interest in shelling grows, Mrs Ecchevarria says a whole new natural world continually unfolds "I Wonder how the animal makes the shell, and how it makes its shell shiny or dull. It is the secretions that an animal has which causes this Each beach affords its own particular shell life. The bay beaches have a different shell life than say where there are rough waters, such as off Hatteras orJFire Island "Environment is very important to the sheller. As I’ve learned more about the theory of continental drift. I find myself mare and more fascinated with the, similarities of shell species Although they become separated, they can still be traced to their origin " Shell club members have a "hotline" to let each other know when they find something unusual, such as shells that have washed up after a storm. "We are lobbying to Senator Cafiero and other politicians to make the local Knobby Whelk the state shell." she said "That would be a nice tribute to South Jersey ’’
