Avalon Gets Dune Funds
AVALON - The Stale has awarded a 114,816 grant to the Borough of Avalon for dune stabilization work. The amount will help fund half the cost of shore protection projects that have been on-going in the Borough for more than ten years. Mayor Ellsworth Armacostsaid. The three phases of work are as follows, Mayor Armacost was informed by New Jersey Senator James S. Cafiero, who helped
secure the grant, and Donald T. Graham. Director of the Division of Marine Services in the Department of Environmental Protection, who released the funds today to the resort: 1. The planting of 5.3 acres of new sand dunes with dune grass for a total amount of 516,000. 2. The fertilizing of 25.5 acres of existing sand dunes for a total cost of $1,632. 3. The construction and
installation of 1,600 feet of sand fencing for a total cost of $12,000. All three phases of work amount to a total cost of $29,632, Mayor Armacost explained. with the Borough matching state funds. "These projects will compliment existing High Dune stabilization started by Avalon in 1968. It is a tribute to the hard work of Yvonne Ballenger. Chairman, and the entire Environmental Com-
mission for their diligent work and, the various borough. residents who have served in many ways over ihe past ten years, on this program," Armacost siad. "TMa stabilization is considered to bfe <&q or the finest programs along our entire coastline and the officials and residents of the Borough of Avalon are to be commended for their work." Director Graham said in a message to the Mayor.
