The fishing just before Memorial Day and on the week following it can be described in only one wayHough! Only the hardiest of angulars got out there and caught fish There were plenty of fish caught, but the fellows who caught them really worked at it. Capt Dave Koscman. on the Top Drawer IF’ teamed up with Dougie. Bright on the Saturday belore Memorial Day. and they caught three drum; then on Memorial Day Captain Dave went out with a group from the boatyard, and brought back H more drum the next night he caught one more drum to bring his total to 55, and his own personal catch to 21 for

this season

We were pretty close to ('apt Dave's location on Memoridf*Day when Capt. Elmer Ideated a spot for Palmer Way and I on the Janie T VII- I got my second drum of the season, a 69 pounder, and Palmer caught a 57 pound humpback. which Capt. Elmer Higgins gaffed for us. (aptain Dick Weber was out Friday before Memorial Day weekend, and had eight drum on the ‘•‘ Bonito''. and then had to come in and call off the South Jersey Fishing and hunting center drum contest because of the

rough seas and fog. It will come off this weekend, so I’ll try to cover an up to date report on this contest. This was the third week of the Lower Township Chamber of Commerce Black Drum Derby, and it was won by Richard Redden, of the Villas, with an 86 pound 5 ounce drum. He also took the weekly Inn Shark Club Drum contest w ith that big fish Over at Joe Rndia's . in tlx* weekly contest he and Jim Wallace are running. Dougie Bright was leading ■ with a 74 pound 6 ounce druip Joe was complaining that it was a shame more people weren't entering big wcakfish in their contest, because a lot of those big tiderunners are being

caught.

The wcakfish action now seems to be from the South of Brandywine light to Brown shoal and Somers shoal of*Cape May Point. There was also a report from Catain Tom Roberts on the "My Gal" that heV had had a good sized catch of big weakfish in the, ocean, but I think he meant around Prissywick shoal at the mouth of the Bay. The big weakfikh have definitely made a move down the Bay towards the Ocean, because there haven't been too many taken by the drum fleet this week, and the bucktailers are working and catching * fish off the two shoals I mentioned before. They may move back up the Bay again, but only time will tell that story. I think is I Wanted a big weakfish now I’d work from Branywine South in search of that tiderunner. Bob Hertzog and Charlie Farr, of Haddon Heights, were out there on Monday on Charlie's "Top ’Banana i”, aqd they called us into the fleet which .was fishing about 3 miles East of 14 Toot light-later on in the evening we called to tell them atht a lot of drum were biting around u§, so they moved to our part’of the fleet, and Charlie Farr caught a nice sized drum which Bob gaffed. They also had some big weakies on their stringer, hut I think they caught them earlier in the afternoon neaf Brandywine. Capt. Steve Rea. on the "Bivo" called and said that he had caught four drum that night, Captain Frank Thompson, on the "Rebel B" had eight drum fro his party-Captain Ray Vnndcgrift. on Bill Diller's "Calamity Jane" was catching drum, but I don’t know how many, because

we had a communications problem I guess, though, that from most of these repons, you can put it all together and figure that Memorial Day evening was

a good night.

It's my guess that we have about three more weeks ol good drumming left, and I'm taking an educated guess on that because Capt. Elmer Higgins, who has cleaned more drum than anyone 1 ever knew says that we are working on the third school, and they've just about spauned out. Capt. Elmer, from his years of experience. sayd that there

ace five |thools of drum •that come into oun Rnv each year- they'staPl With the smaller puppy drum-vj^-to 2Ctpounds, and' then there* are the medium sized gold colored black drum, third arrivals.are larger golden humpbacks . and the forth ones to arrive are the real big bumpers- 80 pounds and up. and then, finally the medium sized fat ones that show striped almost like a sheepshcad when they are

first caught

Last yea r I missed on my guess, because the drum stayed around till after July 7. and I hope I'm wrong again this year, but just in case Fm correct, be sure and get out there by the middle of\i,um.', so that you can get one o( those trophy fish before they leave. Don't give up on weakfish either, because fhey can keep on biting too. and tjvey could turn around add work right back up the l»ay
