COURT HOUSE - May 23rd was a grey, damp morning in Cape May County, but 65 golfers teed off in a drizzling rain, kicking off the 1979 Cape May County Chamber of Commerce Spring Open held at the Stone Harbor Golf Club. Top honors went to Bill Osborne of Wildwood Crest, only after matching cards with Chet Wimberg. mayor of Ocean City, who took second place. Both players finished with a • net score” of 73. using the Calloway scoring system. Wimberg took second place trophy, while Walt Sykes finished third with TS**. The lowest gross score was carded by Ralph Schoonejongen. of Clermont. who fired a 76. barely nipping Ed Wats, who took second low gross with a 78. The third low gross trophy went to Dave Strauble, who finished with 81. Schoonejongen also won a trophy for his longest drive oh hole No. 6 in the special contests event of the tournament. Other special awards went to Jim Pierce, who had the longest drive on hole No. 14 and Ed Ayers who outdrove the field on No. 18. Closest to the. pin trophies were awarded.to Bill Dougherty for his sMbt on No. 9.
