By John T Williams Tuesday, May 15marked the date for the Panthers return match with Wildwood Catholic. The weather was clear and the wind was minimal to afford the players' an opportunity to play under favorable conditioas. In thier first outing. Middle traunced Wildwood Catholic by shutting them out 5-0, and not yielding a single set victory. Wildwood Catholic managed to avoid repeating a shutout by squeezing out a tiebreaker victory in the second doubles event. . Stone Harbor's own Dan Hicks kept up his undefeated pace by rolling past Wildwood Catholic's Bob McShaffrey 6-2. 6-:i After an obvious lapse in concentration Mark Tice came back convincingly to whip Wildwood Catholic's hard hitting Tim Palumbo 6-4.6-2. Harrison and Gabriel repeatedly 'hit clean winners by aggressive net play and hard serving. The second doubles event saw Panthers Wayne Roper and Doug Penkethman narrowly defeated by Carl Hober and Dave Mattera for Wildwood Catholic's lone victory of the afternoon. U was a three set match with the final being decided by a tiebreaker. Roper's serve was once again effective, but careless net play caused 4-6.6-4.76-7 defeat Middle travelled on short notice lo Woodbury Wednesday. .There they met with Gateway Regional High Schools Tennis Team in the first round of the state tennis .tournament. Middle was defeated 4-1. Middle's victory came in the second singles event that pitted Stone Harbor's Mark Tice against the Gator's Bob Kinkade Mark won the first set handily 6-3. Kinkade came back strong in the 2nd set to win easily 6-1. In the third and decisive set it was all Tice as he served and volleyed effectively. Tice repeatedly smashed short approach balls for clean winners Mark finished off the set by breaking Kinkade‘s serve in the final game and winning 6-3. Kevin Mullin, South Jersey's third ranked player, used his power and extraordinary ¥ange to get by Middle's Dan Hicks 6-0, 6-0 in the first singles
event.

Thursday marked the final season match for the Panthers. They hosted Vineland's tough Sacred Heart. The weather was cool and breezy as the Panthers sought to end their season on a winning note The Panthers triumphed by a 4-1 team score Dan Hicks led the Panthers by posting an impressive 6-1, 6-1 victory from Bill Ring. Hicks played nearly errorless tennis and fround up his league play with a phenomenal KMT record that did not allow a single sel victory from any opponents Dan is a senior and honor student and will lx* headed for the U.S Merchant Marine Academy on a full scholarship Second singles Mark Tice sSundly defeated Sacred Heart's Nick Bencie 6-3. 6-3 Tice overpowered Bencie with blistering approach shots for constant winners. Mark, also a senior, has his
sights on heavy equipment operations. Third singles Ronald Gabriel swept Jay Sorrentino and Bob Robertson 6-2, 6-1 for a quick and decisive victory. Gabriel fought off Tony Mancini to win in three sets 6-1. 4-6. 6-1. Ron beat back the challenge and finished the season with an impressive individual 9-3 record. Ron and brother Robert are both senior honor students and will be headed toward Philadelphia for training in the culinary arts. First doubles Lance Harrison and Robert Gabriel swept Jay Sorrentino and Bob Robertson 6-2. 6-1 for a quick and decisive victory . Gabriel was devastating at the net. smashing overheads and volleys for clean winners Middle’s only loss came in the sefrond doubles as Wayne Roper and Doug Penkethman dropped a close and well-fought set to Henry Harris and Bob Pignola 6-4. 6-4 Wayne is a senior and will join the National (hard following graduation for training in the cooking field; This final match left Middle with an overall 9-3 record The departing seniors played inspired and i mpressi ve tennis throughout the season They w ill be sorely missed by their teammates and coach.
