Weather continued to make fishing unpleasant most of the past week, but the anglers who braved the elements and took advantage of the occasional respite from the winds and rain caught fish—weakfish, black drum, biuefish, sea bass and fluke. It is a sad fact of life—anglers are missing some of the best fishing in years because the weather has been most uncooperative in the past three weeks. There is some light at the end of the tunnel, however— the weather can’t stay bad forever. Another sad fact of life—many;' visitor fishermen were turned off from their weekend and weekday visits to thdshore because of all of the adverse publicity about the energy crisis. We still know little—is it real or contrived? Is there or is there not gas? Will it really flow when the price tops $1 a gallon are we being strung out to accept the $1.50 and $2 a gallon we are now hearing rumours about? Whatever, we saw open gas stations over the holiday weekend and no long lines anywhere. The Jersey Cape Chamber of Commerce is sponsoring a hot line-dial 600-465-2111 to get information on fuel availability. Call between 9 a.m. and 5p.m. Weakfish coming in from Delaware Bay remain big, with a lot of fish in the eight to 14 lb. class. Drum catches continue to hit the scales between 50and 75 lb. with the weather being a factor in f how well the anglers are doing. Anglers are cautioned not to stretch the weather margin if they are fishing the bay in small boots. Delaware Bay can be a nasty place if the wind and tide work against each other. We had heard that the weakfish were moving down the bay and some were caught in th ocean. But reports confirmed that the weaks were bgck up in the bay again after the

weekend, giving hope that the fish would hang inside the bay for a while out of reach of the commercial boats which are prevented from netting in the bay. WORLD RECORDS: A new 12 lb. class record is under consideration; a 20 lb. weakfish mark is being considered for a surf angler fishing Brigatine. a 6 lb. tippet class IGFA flyrod record was tied and a new Maryland state record weakfish was submitted for consideration. A lot of record fish go unnoticed by anglers who do not check the IGFA book of records. If you’re fishing for weakies, for example, you should run down the IGFA records to see what might be attainable and fish that line class. Right now with the big weaks around in the bay. fly rod records are all up for grabs. Also for fly rodders, the whole gamut of fluke records is wide open. Fish the fly rod and you might garner a world record citation. CAPE MAY NEWS: Jim Wallace at Wallace’s Tackle Shop, Cape May reported that some drum and weaks were being caught. CHUMMING STARTS Skipper Charlie Shaffer of the party boat Starfish out of Sea Isle City plans to start biuefish chumming Friday night and will sail nightly there after. Skipper Shaffer also said he was contemplating daytime chumming if the wreack fishing faded out completely later this summer.
