AVALON - The surf temperature* was invigorating as 49 Avalon Lifeguards dashed into the water last week as the first parser of their 1979 qualfication test. The guards were slated to hold their entry tests beginning at 10 a m., but conditions did not permit until forty minutes later. Murray Wolf. The tryouts for new Avalon lifeguards were held June 9 at Ida.m All guards must successfully pass the 'i mile swim, run half a mile down beach then dash into the surf and pass a single rowing test in sloppy' water.

All of these feats are line of duty work for all Avalon life guards who may be called upon to perform these feats at any time. The Avalon Beach Patrol remains in a constant state of rqpdiness and will be on patrol even in bad weather because they are there to protect and serve ^he Avalon swimmers. A group of 50 parents and friends of the hopeful lifeguards watched the events. Newly elected councilman Philip F Judyski was on hand to view the morning's tryauts. Six lifeboats were stationed :t i mile out in the surf during the tests, so lhat. if needed the aspiring lifeguards could have received assistance. Avalon's Beaches open officially June 16, At that time, all persons age twelve and over are required to wear a beach tag. Beach tags may be purchased in the Booth behind Borough Hall daily from 9a.m. to4p.m. Free Junior Tennis Program COURT HOUSE - Jersfy Cape Racquet Gub will hol{l their Second Annual Jersey Cape free Junior Tennis Program sponsored by the INA US ITe Indoor Championship Junior Development Funds.
