Dirt* Straits have just issued their follow-up to their chart-topping album and smash single. "The Sultans Of ‘Swing." "Communique" (Warner Brothers) shows.the group is wisely sticking to the same formula which enticed record buyers the lirst time around, and it seems fairly safe to predict Dire Straits won’t succumb to the sophomore jinx. Their appeal is primarily due to Mark Knopfier, who writes melodic tunes, which suit his Dylanesquc vocals and snake-like guitar. The other three members give a firm, rhythmic foundation to build upon and the end result is certainly infectious. albeit, not very di^jnclivc. The. "Father Of British Blues" John Mayall has had a lough time of it the past couple of years Once a dynamic performer, who firs! brnugh to light the talents of Eric Clapton, John McVie. Mick Meet wood. Mick Taylor. Jack Bruce, and Peter Green, to > mention only a handful, he had dcierioraled Into a pa rod > of himself. His music lost its bite and rive. "Bottom Line" (DJM), unfortunately, won t be the record In regain his lost followers although it's, in its «m n way. promising. Musically, the album sounds bland, because he uses too many session men, hut Mayall's voice is often as awesome as his first records. Also, he seems to lx* branching out more, as miK-h ol this is akin to soul or gospel music, rather than straight-forward blues. Don't get me wrong. I like John Mayall and feel he's a true talent, but his records, these days, rarely project what he's capable of.

It seems strange with the lovely voice of Annie Haslam and the delightful melodies of their material. Renaissance hasn’t made a dent oh the singles charts. But then, it would be hard to edit their lengthy pieces to fit on a 45. "Azure dor" iSire) fixes that'problem hy keeping the songs short and to the point. This classically infiunced rock band has always been charming, bul now they stand a chance of reaching the masses This new album is the perfect introduction to the majestic music of Renaissance. Most jazz-rock fusion bands have a problem with their snngwriting. as it's usually’ an excuse for the musicians to show-off with flashy solos. But not with UK. Their second album. ADanger Money" (Polydor), is superbly constructed so each number stands on it* own. The new guitarless trio, still sound full thanks to Eddie Jnbson's keyboards and violin, the simple, rocking drums of Terry Brazio, and John Wetton's extremely medodic bass. UK are blazing new trails in progressive rock, unlike the many pretenders who promise so mucy and never deliver.
