By Boyd Tyler One of the great things about living near the Ocean or Bay is that you can go fishing whenever you get the time, because it’s right at your back door step. The only problem with living so close is that you get the feeling that whenever you want to go. the fishing will be there, so you miss a few good nights in a season, because you always think to yourself-‘ , WeIl I can go tomorrow, so I guess I’ll get thi^ done today”tomorrow is usually the day the wind blows, or the particular species of fish you’ve been after has decided to take off for parts unknown. The transient fisherman has a distinct advantage here, because he comes down here to go fishing, and he does his best to get out there full time to take advantage of the species of fish available. Take Drum for instancea I most every ong I know lias quit trying for them, but last weekend I know of at least three visitors who caught drum around 14 feet light, and down in the rips. Weakfish are another example-the party. boats have been loaded with vacationing anglers day and night, and they've been catching those big tide runners regularly on the ocean front while a lot of our local fellows thought they 'd stay right there, and that they could run out for an hour or so, and catch all they wanted. Well, those big fish didn't stay in one place tbo long, and you had to take full time fishing to find them, so once again our visitors had the advantage. Now, there’s big blues out there getting over top of those big weakfish or chasing them out of the area, so the problem becomes a lettle greater. Capt A. Nace. on the •Hucklebuck"outof Kosemans found a school of these big slammers, and got 22 in the 10 to 12 pound class for his party. He said that some of the boats in the area were stopping and throwing buck tails, and when they got down through the blues they usually hooked up on weakfish. The moral of what I'm trying to say is. that when you hear a species is in and

biting-don't put off your trip-get out there, and give yourself plenty of time to make a good catch. Most of (he action lately has been in the Ocean except for scattered drum catches in the Bay. Jimmie Lummis of Cape May, was out Saturday and Sunday night, and came in with a big hammerhead shark that went 163 pounds, and another blue shark that looked about the samesizeJim was out there fishing lor broadblll swordfish with lighted lures, and he got two of those prizes too, but I don't know what size they were. A lot of boats are getting ready for this overnight fishing, but Jim is the first one I’ve heard of that has caught anything. Back in the sounds has been producing some good fishing too. David "Jerry" Jerabek was in telling me of a trip he made with young Jim Watson, of North Cape May. and they caught some nice flounder in the back waters-in fact. Jim got an 8 pound flounder, and that is a nice catch for this time of the year i it's a nice catch anytime) in the sounds. If the gas situation doesn't get any better we may all

be booking at this type of fishing befor^ the summer is over. We are now Experiencing a real shortage, I guess, as our State goes to odd-even days of , gas rationingalready some of the marinas have been given allocations, and it looks as though there is going to be a famine on fuel that could change pur whole aspect of fishing here on the Jersey Cape, especially on the canyon scene. We may even see some cancellations of billfish tournaments if the gas shortage gets any worse. I still have a hard time believing that there is a shortage, especially since riding through Virginia. Maryland, and North Carolina, and finding no shortage at all. It’s hard to believe that we are short on fuel when you see 57 big boats fishing a 7 day blue marlin tournament with no signs of fuel problems. I understand we are still selling grain overseas at very low prices too, and I wonder why we can't increase the price of these exports, since our oil imports are going up every day.

ACC Book Sale MAYS LANDINGS - .Atlantic Community College’s Daniel Leeds Library is- conducting a ysed book sale which will continue through Aug. 15. ‘More than 3,000 books currently are available. Other volumes will be placed on sale as they are received from donors throughout southeastern New Jersey. The books range in price from 5 cents to $2, with 95 percent of the books selling for between 5 and 25 cents, according to William Spangler. Egg Harbor City. ACC librarian. Spangler stressed that the books are not from public or school libraries; but. for the most part, are unmarked volumes from private collections. The library^on ACC’s Mays Landing campus, is open Monday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays from 8:30a.m. to4:30p.m. Proceeds from the sale will be used to help purchase motorized microfilm readers for ACC’s learning resources center, of which thelibrary isa part.
