MAT TRAILERS
Because of the variety of boat types on the market and boat owners’ varying need*, most trailer manufacturers offer what at first may seem like a bewik dering assortment of models. Therefore, the MerCruiser stem drive boating experts offer some timely advice to help you select the proper boat trailer. For boaters who live close to the water, there are light-duty trailers which tend to have smaller. lighter wheels iand tires which are entirely adequate for the short drives and moderate

Frame cross-memBers in economy models may be fewer in number and farther lipart. The extra cross-members on a heavier trailer give theJrame more resistance to twisttrife. and the closer spacing of keel rollers often makes a boat roll off and on easier and more positively. Also, the frame channeb on an economy trailer may be shallower than those on a most expensive model. Once you are aware of differences like these, you should find it relatively easy to skim through a trailer catalog and decide which of the many models is the likeliest candidate to fit your i boat and your own mdivtdaal ‘ a>d '
Bradley Urges Toxic Waste Cleanup WASHINGTON - Sen Bill Gradley. D-N.J.. is urging Congress to enact a proposed Si.6* billion federal aid program toclean up toxic wastes that pose increasingly serious threats to the public health and the environment. In Senate testimony. Bradley also is citing situations in New Jerseyespecially mercury contamination. at the Hackensack Meadowlands and hazardous storage of chemicals in Elizabeth—to stress the need for swift passage of the legislation. “Nowhere .3 the problem of toxic waste cleanup more critical than in the State of New Jersey.he told a joint hearing of the Senate subcommittees dn environmental pollution and resource protection during an appearance to support the Ad-ministration-backed aid program Bradley noted a recent estimate that "there are possibly 34,000 disposal sites nationally which pose potentially significant health and environmental problems," and he said it is clear that the states must have federal help to meet the challenge at hand. Referring to conditions in his home state, Bradley singled out a 40-acre location in the marshland area know as the m Referring to conditions in his home State. Bradley singled out a 40-acre location in the marshland area known as the Meadowlands where the Wohd-Ridge Chemical Co., a now-defunct mercury processing firm, "has left behind 286 tons of mer- ^ cury" which is seeping into the Hackensack River "and poses a grave danger." In Elizabeth, he said, there are about 50,000 barrels "of unknown topic and explosive materials that are stacked 10-high" and leaking into an inland waterway. "There were stored by the Chemical Control Corp." he testified. "No manifests exist for most of these barrels, and state and federal officials have already uncovered in decaying containers chemicals and acids which in combination produce the same poisinous gases used in the Nazi gas chambers...The potential effects of an explosion at the site are staggering. Clearly a w disaster here would affect v millions of people. ” The state government is trying to deal with these situations, he said, but the* Wood-Ridge company has gone out of business, the Chemical Control Corp. has declared bankruptcy, and "it is impossible for my state or any other to handle the multimillion-dollar cleanups" is such circumstances. "That is why I applaud the Administration's determination to recognize ^ the federal responsibility to assist in these environmental and human disasters." Bradley said. Bradley added, however, that he wants the proposed legislation made even stronger. "The dimensions of the problem are enormous and the magnitude af the response is a beginning, but it falls far short of the need." he said.
