Supreme Court ruled Wednesday that employers and unions may design programs to eliminate "racial imbalances in traditionally segregated job categories." The Court’s action has been seen as endorsing voluntary Affirmative Action programs in collective bargaining agreements. The 5-2 vote rejected a claim by Brian Weber, a white employee, who argued that antidiscrimination provisions of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 prohibited a unionmanagement agreement that reserved 50 percent of craft-training positions for minority workers. Morn said the decision in the Weber case does not have any adverse effect because both private and public employers in the State are mandated to
