P> Boyd Tyler On the week that the ga^ crunch first started to be felt, we had some notable firsts in fishing - Captain' Jim Lummis, on the “Fish n' Fool” came in with the first white marlin of 1979 ■ for New Jersey. It was caught by Jack Tyler Jr., of Cape May, along with a big hammerhead shark which “Butch" Laing. of Cape May also caught As I said in my column * last week there is some fishing we don’t take advantage of Capt. “Hi" Thompson proved it. He and Dick Conover, of Green Creek, got four drum down by the old No. 2 buoy on the edge of the rips on Friday just before the Leonard Verity and Jim Wallace were out on an overnighter with the "Linda Ruth", and came in with 2 big blue sharks, and a couple of yellow fin tuna (they broke, pff a white marlin). Jack (jsbomewas out on the "Red Beard" Thursday, and brought back two yellow fin tuna, so it looks like the canyon is hot as long as we can get fuel. On Saturday Captain Steve Rea. on the "Bivo". and Captain Dick Weber on the "Bonito” both loaded up on big weakfish and big blues; then again on Sunday Capt. Steve majored on slammer blues getting 80 for his * party, while Capt. Dick was loading the box for his gang with big weakfish. Captain Bob Bennett, on the "Tuna", also had a field day Sunday with an even 100 big weakfish for his party. I was talking with Capt. Steve Rea. and he feels that blue fin tuna should strike in here any day now. and that the first ones should be taken out around the fivefathom monster buoy with the Tuna Clippers just about quota'd jput we might have a chance on these torpedo shaped gamesters this year. Captain Bob Schumann, on the "Sea Star." is still running night parties for big weakfish, in the Ocean, and salifying his parties every night with catches of those big tiderunners. He’s running down around the musselbeds for tlffem now. but according to Jim Wallace the big weakies are spread from the mussel beds to AVALON SHOAL, and they're being narked by feeding gulls in the daytime a wqrd of caution, though, be sure to use steohm or wire leaders these big slammer blues are usually around those weakies now. The word is also out that the draggers are not interested in weaks anymmore, because they broke the market with their catches, so maybe we’ll still get some good fishing on them for another couple of weeks. In the Bay most of the action has been way up inshore of M 1 "*' ' M ' shoal ‘-"Dougijj was there had i weakfish and der'"Dougie" told me that some of these tide runners ranged from 8 to 12 pounds. On Sunday Capt. Tom Roberts,- on -the "My •

Gal", and Captain Bill Gohnley on the "Serenity" had a nice catch of flounder in this location for their parties-with a few weakfish thrown in Capt. Tom was telling me on the CB this morning that he'd gotten 22 nice flounder ami two weakies there. „ In between the bad spot: in the weather fishing has been holding up very well and it looks like a good season is lhaping up if we can get the fuel. Oh year, we saw several tankers loaded down going out of the Bay. and according to all reports they are heading out to Baltimore canyon to get out of the way of other tankers coming in. This backup is now being delivered thereby causing a major backup in the port of Philadelphia. Don't blame these truckers though, they arc caught just like you and I with escalating prices and fuel rationing. New week the South Jersey Fishing and hunting center will be kicking ofl it's $10,000 annual white marlin derby, and I'm going to try to cover it for your reading pleasures and hopefully I'll be abie- to cover the Cape May County Marlin tournament July 1719too. By the way. Bob Zane. Captain of the "Misty" won thrid prize in the Hatteras Marlin tournament with his 350 "^ound blue Marlin-Bob said they tried to fish the last day Saturday, but the seas were tob rough So another CaglT May County boat made the grade in Hatteras.
