Seashore Encounters\

By Stephen Gabriel Staff Acitiunt City of Ocean City

No doubt we’ve all at one time or another imagined how quiet or even dull the winters are at the seashore. Well, for the residents eg Ocean City’s north point along the Great

Egg Harbor Inlet, this winter was anything but dull. Severe erosion of the beaches fronting the inlet threatened several homes and atotm waves actually broke up cinder block

walls, eroded front yards and toppled utilit/pdles. Frequently appearing in local newspapers and on Philadelphia television newscasts, the north point erosion was constantly a topic of conversation in town, and needless to say was of major concern to the north point residents. Almost to be expected were the numerous and differing opinions voiced as to the problem’s solution^ probably stemming from the reality that beach erosion is no stranger to the beaches along Ocean City's north end or even along other South Jersey inlets. In fact, an examination of U.S. Army Cdrps of Engineers' records shows that the recent north point shoreline retreat is just one instance of many injet migrations and shoreline fluctuations in that area of Ocean City. Back as far as 1842, Corps of Engineers' surveys depict Ocean City's northern terminus to be about three-quarters of a mile south of where it is today, and that there-was actually a small island in the middle of Great Egg Harbor Inlet between Ocean City and the town which sits to the north of the inlet, Long port. By 1866, the southern tip of Longport had extended into the inlet and "annexed" the small island. So in 1890 there was one inlet channel lying near the Ocean City shore, but by 1937 fishermen had a choice of routes through the inlet as a principal channel had fromed along the tip of Longport with a secondafy channel situated near Ocean City. Various shoreline adjustments accompanied these channel fluctuations in Great Egg Harbor Inlet, but because development had not yet crept within reach of the inlet waters, the beach canges generally went unnoticed. It was a different story during the late 1940's as shoreline retreat along all of Ocean City’s north end beaches necessitated the relocation of several beachfront homes to empty lots further away from the ocean. This erosion trend culminated in the con-, struction in 1951 by the

State and City of a stone seawall standing ten feet above mean low water elevation. Running east /rom the Ocean CltyLongport toll bridge for 4050 feet along inlet and ocean beach frontage, it was this same structure which took such a beating while protecting beachfront homes this past winter. And one year later high tide covered the inlet beaches completely up to the seawall just as it had this winter. In (act, pools of water, sat behind the seawall where numerous expensive homes now stand. Apparently the early 1950's marked the peak of an erosion period along Ocean City's north point because a few years later as the main inlet channel , shifted north toward Longport, the Ocean City north point beaches built out into the inlet. Enough beach accumulated so that there was relatively little property damage to the north end during the Storm of March 1962. The pendulum Iwd swung the other wav. * UPCOMING OFFERINGS Oceanic Society.
