There's Gold In Them •Thar Beaches i + Author's Note: This article originally appeared in the Sentinel-Ledger back in April of this year. Once again this winter Jersey Shore communities lost quite a bit of sand from their beaches. Some was wind-blown over street-end bulkheads or onto beachfront properties, while much was eroded by oceam storms. Did you know . however, that each winter’s sand lost from the beaches represented to each community the loss of thousands of dollars'’ Let’s take a look at just how costly the sand loss is. The present cost of hydraulically dredged sand

pumpea onto beaches ranges from $1 to $4 per cubic yard of sand depending on the size of the project, source of sand. stc. More . specifically, the recent beach nourishment project at Ocean City’s north point beaches was slated to involve up to 200.000 cubic yards of sand to be pumped at a cost of up to $400,000. Roughly speaking then, the sand would cost about $2 per cubic yard Taking that $2 per cubic yard vaue and applying it to the 900,000 cubic yards of sand estimated to have been lost from all of Ocean City’s beaches two winter ago. it is quickly apparent that there is "gold in them thar beacher”!

So what can be done to put a least a partial halt to the evaporation of our tax dollars as represented by the annual beach sand losses? As recently as this past winer. members of the Ocean City Anglers Association and many interested residents spearheaded the collection and installation on the beach of discarded Christmas trees. In their various patterns most of the trees have successfully trapped wind-blown sand and have held the sand through this winter’s storms. By the use of free Christman trees and a lost of community-spirited cooperation, a large amount of valuable sand has been restrained on the

beaches.

Through the years many Jersey Shore communities have installed thousands of feet of snow fence to catch wind-blown sand and hold it through stomrs. In fact, research at Sandy Hook by Rutgers University has shown in the first year after installation. ?now fence catches 12 to 20 cubic feet (about two thrids cubic yard on the average) pfer linear foot of fence. So, a’50 foot section of snow fence which is long enough to extend across the frontage of most beachfront lots will trap about 33 cubic yards of sand in its first year. Using the cost range presented, earlier, that sand would be worth between $33 to $132. Meanwhile, with a purchase price of 40 cents per linear foot, the 50 foot section of snow fence cost $20. Quite a bargain! In addition, the fence will continue to trap sand at rales of one third cubic yard pei* linear foot in succeedingyears. The same can be said for the use of dune grass. Rutgers found that dune grass plants catfh about 7 cubic feet of sand 6er year, or about 1 cubic y&rd of sand caught for every nine plants. One plant costs 7 cents, so the cubic yard of sand trapped by nine plants costs 63 conLs as compared to the $1 to $4 cost range by sand pumping. As an added value, rach dune grass, plant sends out shoots to the side which sprout pii through the sand as new plants which serve to increase the ambhnt of sand captured per plant initially planted Accordingly, even.- spring, community volunteers in Avalon and Ocean City are seen planting sprigs of dune grass on newly developed mounds of loose sand as well as existing dunes. Of course, once a dredge and pipeline is set4k. sand can be pumped orit\a beach much faster thanTI collects by dune grass or snow fence Ironically however, sand that is pumped onto a beach needs something to hold it in place, and what better stabilizer than the intricate root system of dine grass complimented perhaps with show fence?! Depending on the specific beach and ocean conditions, each method has its place. In any case, maintaining a shoreline is a never-ending task that can surely benefit from yearly installation of snow fence, dune grass, ind other suitable vegetation.
