By Boyd Ttyftr |,ast weekend saw some surprising catches The first of which was a 42 pound ^ white marlin talten by*'a boat named “Our Gnag" out of FA buoy Jim Wallace showed me the picture oHhe fish, but I’m not sure of the anglers name, then down in the rips two boats found weakfish on top. and had a held day I’m not Sure who they were either, but one of the boats was named v the Men Hen ' at least, that I he way it sounded on by CH (’apt AJ Nace. on the "Hueklebuck” got three yellow fin tuna in the 40 to 50 pound range in • Baltimore Canyon, and on Sunday Captain Frank Casscdy. on the “Lady (iracr" got 17 big weak fish anti lt> big blues for his party South of Me Crises shoal, that same day Cap! Scott Smith on the “ftquilla" out of Cape

Island s West Basin came in with five white marlin releases, and big shark (I think it was a Make) from Washington canyon. This set the stage for the first day of the Cape May County Marlin tournament, as half of the 41 boats registered headed down Soth while the rest of the fleet went towards Baltimore canyon Thanks to my old friend Art Price, and with help from Helen Hewitt in Lou Kodia's office. I was on Bob Smith’s "Endless Summer', a fifty foot Hatteras, and I can safely say she is one of the finest boats I’ve ever fished from Lou Rocha and Mike Zicarelli picked me|Aip at 3:30 on Tuesday nroniing, and we got on board at 4:15, which was my first introduction to this fine vessel. It took us about 4 ^flours to reach “Poormatis". which is between Baltimore and Washington Canyon', and the first (and only) fish taken by our boat was caught by “Scottie" SmithScott Smith’s nephew. It was a 60 pound yellow fin tuna We raised 5 fish that day"Scoftie" had three of his close friends along named Barry. Josh, and Jack-we were supposed to be teaching them what we knew about marlin fishingwell. we showed them how to miss five marlin in a row. but the way these young fellows performed, you can be certain that they will also be heard of in the future’ they are definitely the coming generation of canyon fishermen On the second day of the tournament almost everbody headed for Baltimore canyon, because of the 51 whiles that were released on Tuesday half of them were taken in the Baltimore, and that's a lot closer than way down South Well, we raised a white early, and missed him. and then "Scottie" got a big tuna on which pulled the hook after a 20 minute battle; then I got a big fellow on. and played him for 35 minutes and pulled

the hook on him too-then a blue marlin got in our baits, and cleaned us up, and almost stole our teaser, and went on his way, and that was all she wrote for the second day. Scott Smiths "Acquilla", Bob Zane's "Misty’’. Layton Wilson’s "Lovely Lynne ", and Dick Castellini's "R & T" made up the winning team with (I think) 14 released. You know this is the 23rd year for the Cape May County Marlin tournament, and I believe I've fished in„15 of them—this year I couldn't help but marvel at the beautiful boats that make up our canyon fleet. Our Cape May County tournament is the only release tournament left that I know of. and I still get a thrill out of fishing in it that is hard to describe; some felloes like Carl Galantine. Nontes Kontes, Jim Kontes, Herman*Kapp, and Karl Lukens have fished in all 23, and they're still coming , back. We all missed Olin Woolson, of Wildwood, this year, and Jules Slevin, of Stone Harbor—Jules boat the "Aunt Belle" fished it, but Jule is still recuperating from surgery. I haven’t been able to list all the individual catches, or all the winners, because they were not available at press time—they’ll probably be somewhere in this issue. I would have had them but I missed the awards banquet because I had to help buy a fat lamb at the 4-H fair. So, another marlin tournament is over, and already plans are being made for next year, l^ord willing I’ll probably be fishing in it—those two days are some of the most important fishing days I have. We had very good weather this year, and good sportsmanship prevailed everywhere. Now. on to some last minute items—weakfish showed in quantity in the 60 foot slough inside of Brandywine, and some real good catches were made—I hope to have more on this next week. Edie Smith, of Erma, told me her family had a very goal catch there, and a lot Of boats headed out that way Saturday.! Those big slammer blues are still around, and so are blue fin tuna. I believe the flounder fishing should get hot this week, so get out there whenever you can— and take a kid with you. Nature Walk CAPE MAY - On Saturday. July 28. Dr. Harold A.
