Spring-Flowering
BultaO
After many years, a single daffodil bulb can divide many times to form a large clump. If the flowers are smaller than normal or the bulbs have become two crowded, these clumps can be divided. Tulip bulbs can also be dug and separated if you desire to keep them flowering for more than 2-3 years. The lime to dig and divide Spring-flowering bulbs is now. after the foliage has turned yellow, but before it dries up and disentegrates. If you wait until later. you will be unable to find the bulbs. Use a fork lo lift the ,)ulbs. Very little soil will '"ling to them. Inspect for signs of disease. Any that look suspicious should be discarded. When the afaaodil clump has been lifted, all bulbs can be pulled apart and each planted individt^ally. Those that are espicially small should be discarded since (hey if ill take an additional year or two of growth before they will bloom. With tulips, select only the largest bulba of the clump

•When air temperatures are over 75 or 80 degrees, do not use'lawn week killers, or damage to or-
namentals will result.
- Mossaic on cucumbers and melons is carried by insects. Use an all-purpose insect spray, such as: Malathlon or plant
resistant varieties
-Thorbugly water trees, 'shrubs, grass, flowers and vegetables when dry periods prevail. Soak
deeply once a week.
-Continue pruning most of the lateral tomato
suckers
- Young plants of cabbage. cauliflower and broccole should be transplanted from seed bed by mid-Julv. -To control early and late blight and enthracnose on tomatoes, spray with a recommedned fungicide, such as Maneb or Bravo, when first fruit is evident. -Continue applying an all-purpose fruit spray to apples at 7-10 day intervals and to peaches, pears, cherries and plums every 2
weeks.
-Dig and divide German
iris until mid-July.
-Propagation of many
shrubs is still possible by softwood cuttings in a
coldrame or greenhouse. --Start cuttings of
chrysanthamums and
carnations for full winter bloom in
greenhouse.

Mulching Roses / There are many advantages to using a mulch. This is so throughout the home landscape, but especially important in the rose garden. When used with roses, mulches help reduce diseases. Because roses are so prone to powdery mildew and black spot, the presence of a layer of organic mulch on the soil surface will help reduce infection by cushioning the droplets of water when they fall on the hard soil surface. Without a mulch, when the droplets hit the ground, some df the water bounces back to the lower leaves, carrying with it spores that may be present on the soil surface. Do not assume this to be a cure-all. Regulaf fungicidal application is still most important in keeping mildew and black spot in check. Many mulching materials can be used successfully: certainly your choice will depend on the cost, availability, and ease of handling. Those that allow water to run through them without holding moistgure. must be used. They Include bark or chips, cocoe or buckwheat hulls, grass clippings, pine needles, chopped leaves (by a rotary mower), and grass clipping Most of these, except the clippings should be put down about 2-3 feet deep.
Novembe#. before replanting. Recently, research indicates that it is probably better to replant the bulbs immediately after they have been dug and divided. The best place for the bulb is in <he ground. Unless you have a dark. dry. cool place where they can be kept during the summer. prolonged storage temperature in excess of fi5 degrees and other unacceptable conditions will cause injury to
the bulbs.
Move. Divide Iris in Karly
Summer
Late June and early July is the time to move and
divide iris.
Clumps need dividing about every 3 or 4 years or they will become overgrown and uifproductive. * Trim off the leaves to about one-third their height. Lift the clump, wash off excess soil, and cut the original clump into several smaller ones. Each should have at least one fan of leaves. Dftisidns having several fans of leaves will usually bloom the fdflowinfyear. Iris grows best in full sunlight. The Japanese and Siberian irises will tolerate shade and can be grown in
moist soil.
Plant the rhisome, or fleshy stem parallel with the soil surface. In heavy soil it may be an inch or two below the surface. Established iris that are growing well do not need fertilizer. Weaker clumps may be fed a 5-10-5 ro 5-10-10 fertilizer at one-half cup for six small plants. Scratch this lightly into the soil around the iris and then water thoroughlv.
