Sideline Shots
By The OW Sport
The old sport has been sidlined by preoccupation with Jersey produce, which he hucksters in the summer. But one person said he missed the column, so the Old Sport is back in the Groove. Although school activities are over and he misses the contacts at the high school, he will try to keep you informed of sports activities in the area. Summer basketball is in full swing with leagues operating both outdoors in Stone Harbor and indoors in Avalon. Gary Barber has a strong team in the Avalon League, with athletes like Ralph Johnson, Steve Frame, R.W Thompson performing for him. Ricky Harmon is playing with the big boys from the Atlantic City area in the Ocean City League. Ricky ‘ denies that he is interested in St. Joseph’s Holy Cross, Old Domiition and Providence as reported in the "Big Paper ”. The Old Sport can't help but reminisce about teachers and their summer jobs. In the old days teachers worked hard in the summer with jobs on milk trucks, bakery trucks,
coke trucks, etc. Now we find Chicky Ludman managing the Starstream Motel in Avalon. Bill Lucas visiting his concession stand in Stone Harbor, Larry Kelly running a miniature golf course in Stone Harbor and Marty Edwards running the Captain's Table in Widlwood Crest. But that's progress! Chick Ludman has a basketball team in the Cape May League. He is drooling over three freshmen who should be playing for Middle Twp. next year. Dougy Fulford, Dawson Spaulding and Kevin Jaudon. And then there’s Frank Brown who should be a coming sur. Phil "The FJex" Exley will be starting informal football practice at Memorial Fieltr on Aiig. 1st. He is enthusiastic about his prospects for the coming year. Incidentally. Phil made a great impression on the, local Kiwanis Club when he spoke to their dinner meeting recently. “The Flex" bubbles over with enthusiasm and ideas for the fall. Hope it is contagious with his players.
