All artists share the desire of making tangible that which has been experienced Each artist is motivated by his own particular drives which direct not only the production of works, but also determines their content Vision is shaped by intent The amateur may paint as a pasttime, hut the artist looks for a deeper fulfilment I have a friend on this island. Jeani Haryslak. who is an artist of the vehemently expressive type When we are together, we always talk Art. and are enthusiastic viewers of each other's work We share the bond of perceiving Art in the GRAND sense, influenced by a solid education in Art History and studio practices at our respective Philadelphia Art Schools < Jeani attended Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art ). Our work appears vastly different and we appreciate even the differences. knowing there is something which runs deeper, and that is a sense of the artist's role. TTie other day we were talking about motivation, about intense urges that keep us looking and pnyiucing. and which, pemiaps, can only be un-

derstood by other artists "I just love it", said Jeani. "when people say to me. 'Oh. you paint; how nice It must be very relaxing ' Relaxing 0 I’ll show you relaxing!", and she grimaces and mimes the story of Vincent, his ear. and the razor ‘The Agony and the Ecstacy" is not merely the name of a novel, but is an active, living experience for some artists. An artist may choose to knock out paintings with little effort, or strive to express that which is always just out of reach Sadly, those of the former type have the most public appeal I worked at a local gallery for a couple of years, and greviouslv noted that one of the most successful artists there in terms of sales and ap preciativc viewers is a woman from Alexandria who paints variations of the same pictures over and over again while watching TV. Contrast her with Jeani. for example, who broods over, and nurtures an image until it bursts forth, and then lives with it. moves with it. refines it until it stands in full bloom, pulsating with her energy Jeani has yet to sell a canvas. . As we view an artist's work, perhaps we might see it more completely if we consider the direction in which the artist is working, and the motivation behind choosing that particular viewpoint The goal is not always to "paint a pretty picture". The artist may bo evoking emotion, describing a phenomenon, exploring composition, satisfying an urge, pleasing his mother, searching for God. playing with blue, etc. Barth Wins Awards Eight years old Angelique T Barth of 331 K Magnolia Ave., Wildwood, was awarded 7 trophies after returning trom a month long visit with tier grandparents and family by herself, in fsracl The contest is held yearly through-out the US to compete in such categories as talent, poise, and modeling.
