SQUASH FLOWERS BUT NO SQUASH Gardeners become puzzled because their summer squash plants arc producing many flowers, but no fruit form. The natural condition for squash, cucumbers and pumpkins is to produce male flowers first and then after 10 days to two weeks, the first female flowers form. Fruit is produced only by thq female flowers, so the eawTnale flowers merely btoKi and fall off
the plant, u*
You carPtell the dilference in the two kinds of flowers easily. The male flower has no small fruit attached to it. The female cucumber flower has a tiny cucumber at the base of the flower and zucchini will

have a miniature zucchini fruit below the petals. An important exception to this delay of female flowers is found in some of the new hybrid summer squashes. These hybrids generally produce greater yield than non-hybrids and some mature earlier than the standard squash varieties. Many hybrids will first produce female flowers before male flowers appear. The first fruit from these hybrids will frequently rot before growth takes place or the fruit will invariably be malformed. The stem end is very small and the tissue may b^shrunken. • In summary, both male and female blossoms of the vine crops must be producedtt the same time for satisfactory fruit
production.
PRUNE PETUNIAS FOR MORE BLOOMS Home gardeners can enjoy the blooms of their petunia plants until September or even October if they prune them back now. This doesn't mean shearing the entire plant leaving nothing but a stub. Be selective and prune back only those shoots that are "bloomed out" with perhaps one or two buds on
them. Cut these shoots to about two or three inches from the bottom of the plant. It will take about four weeks for the plants to develop new shoots and by the middle of September you’ll have flowers to enjoy through late summer. You can also extend the blooming season of salvia (scarlet sage), geraniums, ^zinnias, marigolds and other annuals by removing
dead blooms.
If you can't bring yourself to prune your petunias after you’ve nurtured them through the hot weather, bolster your confidence by visiting the Rutgers Display Gardens and see what the home horticulture experts did to the petunia beds and scarlet sage to ensure a mass of colorful blooms for visitors to admire during September and October.
And quite frankly, on the hottest summer days, you shouldn't turn us on so much, especially during the Energy Rush Mnyrs. £»ir conditioners, clothes dryers, wafer heaters and other major appliances demand thousands of kilowatts of electricity to run. On most days, Atlantic Electric can meet these demands with little trouble. But when the thermometer climbs over 90° and the humidity goes up with It, record customer demands can cause brownouts and blackouts and may result in higher electric rates in years to come. Your job is simple: - Shift some of your use of appliances to before ten in the morning and after ten at night. - During the Energy Rush Hours, use your major appliances only one at a time. • If you must use it, keep your air conditioner set on low or at 78°...

EVERYBODY’S APHIDS YIELD TO MALATHION Almost everyone has aphids in their garden. These tiny green, black or pink insects cause curled or crinkled leaves and stunted, yellowed plants. In your vegetable garden you’ll probably find them on tomatoes, peppers, beans, melons and others. Look for clusters of them on the tender growing tips of rose bushes and other flowers. We recommend a srpay made of two teaspoonfuls of 50 to 75 percent malathion emulsifiable concentrate to a gallon of water. Spray once a week and make sure your spray reaches the undersides of the leaves. And be sure to read the label directions and precautions before using any pesticide. For further details about pest control, see the free Rutgers publication "New Jersey Vegetable Pest Control Recommendations for Home Gardens." You can get a copy from your Cape May County agricultural agent. ••• LEAKHOPPKRS , FREQUENTI.Y FEED 1 ON GARDEN PLANTS Leafhoppers are small insects, not over one-half inch long, that feed on the foliage of almost all types of plants. They usually suck the plant juices from the undersurface of leaves. They hop or fly away when disturbed. 'Hieir wings are held in a rooflike position when they rest The removal of plant juices from foliage resupof in a loss of color, frequently in a stippled pattern. Some leafhoppers act as carriers of plant diseases. A good example is aster yellows, a virus disease known to home gardeners who grow asters. Leafhoppers can be controlled by the application of insecticides. Those most frequently used by home gardeners include methouychlor or carbaryl (Sevin) or diazinon. Systemic insecticides such as Meta-Systox-R and dimethoate (Cygon or DeFend) will also obtain good good leafhopper control. However, the manufacturer's labei should be consulted for specific plant applications.
