American Legion Post No. 331 was organized 34 years ago by 14 veterans of World War II and was named in honor of Stephen C. Ludlan, who lost his life in the struggle. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse D. Ludlan and the brother of John M. Ludlan, who was one of the charter members of the Post and served as Commander in

1948-49. The veterans had their sights on a structure at 117th St. and Second Avenue, which was built in 1872 as a U S. Life Sdving Station. This Service was absorbed by oie ** CUSSf" Guard in 1915 and for over 30 years it was their headquarters, When the Station went on the auction J)lock the Stephen C. Ludlan ^ost ■***■■**■»

was the successful bidder. The price? S2.539.00 for the entire property! It became the official headquarters with dedication ceremonies on Memorial Day 1948. Longtime members ^proudly recall this historymaking occasion, among them Eric Arenberg, Art Anderson. Clintoi^ Garrison, Frank Giampidf Herb Hornsby. Gustave Miller and George McClure. Also. James Otten, Joseph Weber, , Theron Wetzler, Robert Wolfington, James Wood and Mario Zuccato. Our American Legion Post has • been thriving organization over the years and now boasts 55 members .as well as a busy Auxiliary (which was chartered in 1949). Its civic activities include several school programs for Stone Harbor and Avalon and projects of interest to both veterans and non-veterans. The Memorial Day observance is a very special occasion. # with patriotic messages'. marching bands, decoration of graves in seven local cemeteries, and the laying of the wreaths on the water. Legion men and women remember, and they help others to remember, the sacrifices that have bcrti made to keep America the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. Robert J. Hafele is the present Post Commander, and Horace Griffith is the Post Adjutant. I am grateful to “Griff” for these interesting facts about our local American Legion. He tells me that in 1948.117th Street was down in the dunes, a dusty road leading to Third Avenue. Second .Avenue was not extendeckpast the Legion home untnb966. Stone H8fbor marches
