I know I have remarked from time to time about the fishing being good this season, but now [ want to come right out and state that I think this is the hottest year we've had since 1 can remember. The \(rater in the ocean is clear blue clean into the 20 fathom line, and in some cases farther inshore than that. In the Bay they’re getting weakfish. flounder, and big sharks. Yellow fin luna and white marlin are being caught in sight of five fathom light ; which takes you back somewhere around 1938 when Olin Woolson. John VpfciBuren. and Ike Swain used to lake marlin on the East lumps. Here are some examples of what I mean: Jack Osborne and Don Murphy on the ‘ Red Beard" had 17 yellow fin tuna, and 3white marlin fishing on Thursday and Friday down by. Delaware lightship- Capt. Dick Weber on the “Bonito" had one white marlin on Saturday and three on Sunday for his .parties, fishing in the same approximate location. The “Miss Pimco" had 3 whites, and Scott Smith on . the “Aquilla" had two ^ white marlin inside of Washington Canyon. Now. here comes the topper - Joe Rodia was telling me that Jim Nash, of Mayville. fishing three other fellows, raised 11 white marlin inside the twenty fathom line - they kept one. and released 7. and missed three of those btllfish. On the charter boats where their parties wanted to go blue fishing. Capt. Steve Rea loaded his fish box on the "Bivo” last weekend-OnSunday he had 72 slammer blues for his party. I was talking to Lou Hauhois on the “DottieUn". and he's been loading up on big blues every trip. Down at Joe Rodia’s Thursday night Joe was

telling me of two young anglers that deserve recognition-Fishing 6n Captain Tim Hyde's "Capt. Cahill" 14-year-old Kevin Peters caught a 46 lb-4az. yellow fin tuna and a 33 lb. white marlin and 15-year-old Todd Barry got a 44 lb • 4o7.. yellaw fin on the same trip. They took the tuna on a scobe jet lure they purchased at Rodias'. and the marlin was on a rigged ha la o (ballyhoo) Then, while I was standing there Captain Bill Kingsland. who runs the "Carol K" came in with 12-year-old Francy Res nick, who weighed in a 10 Ib.-Ooz. weakfish which he caught on a bucktail dressed with a plactic worm, and 13-year-old Joe Resnick put a 9 lb.-lew. tide runner on the scale, which he took with the same lure; then 13-year-old Dan Kingsland weighed in a l3lb.-9oz. blue which he took off a liootchie. Captain Bill said they were down in the Old Grounds, and that their total catch was 27 big blues and big weakfish. Now on the Bay side of the fishing ’ scene the big news was that shark fishing had come into
its own.
On Tuesday Billy Mulligan came in and asked me to come down and take a picture ot the big shark they'd just hung up on the Inn's shark club scales. It was a 249 lbs. sand tiger taken by Andy Barber on the boat “Melissa Ann" Andy playcxl that moaster 2- , i hours on 50 lbs. test, and when they got it up to the boat. Billy Mulligan shot it between the eyes, and Earl Harris helped them secure it to the boat for the ride back to their dock at Back Harbor wharf in Cape May. They caught this giant on the shoal North of Brandywine light. The young ment at Roseman's Boat Yard were out shark fishing in the Bay up near 14-ft. light on the same day, and they had a 200 lbs. sandbar shark that Donald Roseman caught on the ““Top Drawer H". They were towing this giant in alstf, but the line parted on the way in. so they didn’t gel a change to hang that big shark on the rack. The 249 lb. sand tiger that Andy Barher took is now leading in the Inn shark fishing contest. Elsewhere in the Bay weakfish in the 1 to 3 lbs. f classs were biting well in the 60 ft. water inside of Braniywine light, but the big news here too. was that bigger weaks were being taken off the flats opposite Uyre's Dutch Kitchen. |fld on down the Bay opposite Bay view marina. It seems that a warm current of water worked in close to the beach in the Bay, and the row boat fleet loaded up on them. Most of the time the fish bit best on chedder crab, but Bob Neely told me he was doirig just as well on clam strips and squid. »Walter Soboleski
