TWO ENDANGERED BIRDS HAVE A HOME AT THEJERSEYSHORE By by Julie Alba no ..(Editor's Note: Julie ta writing a guest article this week. She is a Junior at Stockton State College majoring in marine biology. Julie to a summer intern with the City of Ocean City and she conducts the Recreation Department's seashore ecology program for children). ..Anyone who walks the beach at Corsons Inlet State Park at the south end of Ocean City may notice an area posted: BIRDS NESTING PLEASE KEEP OUT. This location is a nesting ground for the Least Tern, a shore bird which has recently been added to the State of New Jersey's Endangered Species List. The Least Tern’s nest is a small hollow in the sand, on open sandy beaches, and because the eggs and chicks are nearly the same color as the sand, they are camouflaged from their natural enemies. However, the eggs and young birds can easily be stepped os when pedble invade the nesting grounds. In addition, nesting sites of the Least Tern are being lost to recreational activities, development, and the spread of vegetation. As a result, the Least Tern nests have become limited to areas close to the high tide mark, and of course, eggs . laid in thte region of the beach have a good chance of being flooded by the tides. So, the Least Tern faces a variety of problems. While newborn Least Terns are sandy colored, the adults resemble the seagull but are distinguished by a white patch on the forehead, black cap, yellow beak, and orange feet. The Least Tern grows only to be about 10 inches long, and unlike the smooth flight of the seagull, the Least Tern darts in and out as it flies. Another endangered shore bird, in fact even more in. danger of ex-

Unction than the Least Tern, is the Black Skimmer. Because the Skimmer also nests on open beach areas, its eggs are vulnerable to the same activities that Least Terns are, sosurvival is difficult. The Black Skimmer to the only one of three known skimmers in the world that is found in the United States. Its long, knifelike, red bill with a black tip easily identifies it The unusual bill allows the Black Skimmer to fly a few inches above the waters of the back bay and push tlte bottom part of its bill through the water like a plow. Surface fish and shrimp are scooped into the bird’s beak. If you are interested in watching this bird feed, twilight is the best time. In order to assure the protection and preservation of the Least Tern and Black Skimmer, it is important that posting and patrolling of their nesting areas be continued. We can all help the birds by staying
