A CURIOUS CRAB. A yellow plastic drifter used in blue crab studies is part of the treasure found by James Tweed along the shore of Delaware Bay.
Blue Crab Study Continues
Don't be surprised if it looks like the Coast Guard is throwing yellow frisbee’s with tails at you while you're fishing off New Jersey or in Delaware Bay this week. Its all part of a study of young blue crabs being conducted by the University of Delaware. Each yellow, saucershaped disk with a foot-and-a-half stem is a drifter which moves with the currents in the Ocean and Bay. The long-term circulation of water at the mouth of Delaware Bay is roughly off shore near the surface and on shore near the bottom. About half the drifters have a weight on the stem, these will sink and drift in currents along the bottom. The other drifters, without wejghts, float at the surface. It is thought that young blue crabs may be moved in and out of the bay on these currents. Release and recovery of these drifters will provide more detailed information about the bay’s Currents. the U.. Coast Guard and N.J. Marine Advisory Service in Cape May are cooperating with the
University of Delaware in the study. Coast Guard helicopters are making the drops and the Marine Advisory Service is collecting information on where the drifters are found in New Jersey. The drops will be repeated five more times through the fall. Each disk contains a dbrial number, a Delaware address and telephone numbers. The serial number, date, time and location are recorded when the drifter is released and the same information is needed when it is found. This information helps to determine the speed and direction of current movements. There is a $1 reward for this information. You can mail tly information to the University of Delaware, call the Delaware Marine laboratory in Lewes <302-645-4000). or call Stewart Tweed of the N.J. Marine Advisory Service in Cape, May Court House <609-465-5115). First released in April some of the disks are still washing up on the beaches. Approximately 3<J percertt
of the surface drifters have been recovered but only 8 percent of the bottbm drifters have been found. Most of the ones dropped at stations in Delaware Bay have come ashore in Delaware or have been carried out of the bay.
Keep, your eyes open for these disks to get your reward and to contribute to this study. The drifters give only a crude estimate of the currents, but the more that are found and returned, the more reliable the estimate.
