OCKAN AND BAY
SOUNDINGS
By Boyd Tyler
Well, the heat wave finally caught up with us fishermen, and because of the very high temperature of the water in the ocean and bay this past weekend catches dropped off drastically. There were a lot of good catches amongst the charter boat captains, but they’re the pros in our field, and they work hard at their trade. The weekender or once or twice a week fisherman did not fare so well, because if you're not out there every day following the fish, its hard to know just where to go. There were some good catches of weakfish and flounder in the bay during the week, but on the weekend the hot, humid weather made it uncomfortable anchoring, and drafting was almost as bad. There were exceptions. however, and that was amongst the old timers who knew just what tide to fish, and what bait to use. ► Bob Neely, and his fishing partner, found a batch of weakies and flounder out near where Bob used to put his barrel ' on the edge of four fathom slough, and they had a nice catch-Bob said they had 32 weakfish and eight flounder. Bill Yearicks fished on a boat inshore off Sun Ray Beach Road (on t he old drum beds), and got 52 weakfish using mostly clam as bait-Bob and his buddy used clam and
squid. These weren’t the 10 to 12 pound tide runners that we had in the early spring, but they were nice weakies that went up to 24 to 3 pounds. The anchorage produced some fair catches for the head boats, but most of the catches in the Bay were made inshore in the channels back of the
flats.
I guess the temperature of the water and the tropical depression, that passed by our shores, had something to do with the weekend decline. On the Ocean side Captain Steve Rea on the "Bivo” came in with 50 big blues for his party Saturday, and on Wednesday he had 133.
and at 6 a.m. Capt. Elmer Higgins. Mel Huffer, “Jerry” Jerabek, Bob Hertzog. and his grandson Richie Rayser, and I left Roseman's to go trolling in the ocean. We headed out towards McCries shoal, and dropped our tropping lines there, but we didn’t get any fish until we got near FA buoy, and there an 11 pound blue jumped on a pink sea witch lure, and "Jerry" Jerabek landed him. We tried hootchies, feathers, and bingle bananas, and none of them produced-in desperation I put out a green machine, which another 11 pounder jumped on, and I reeled
, .... — —, him in. then I no sooner got slammers for his party. He it out again, and a 3 pound wound up on Saturday dolphin attacked it. Thats
working dear up to the Northeast End to find those big blues. We’re planning an overnighter with him for swordfish in another week, and if we’re lucky enough to get good weather I ought to be able to tell about a first hand glimpse at
swordfishing.
Capt. Dick Weber on the "Bonito" was high Captain on Friday as he got 3 swordfish for his party-one weighed 94 pounds, and two tipp«l the scales at 142 pounds each. He followed up his success on a canyon trip Tuesday as be raised a white marlin and bugled him on a "green maCMne". Sunday was a pretty fair diy as far as weather goes,

Well, we decided to put out two green machines, and just as we were getting ready to make a move "Jerry" Jerabek hooked up on a 13 pounder, and ‘‘Richie’’ Rayser got another Jl pounder fast. We landed both of those fish, and "Richie", being only 10 years old, did a good job on that slammer blue. That just about wound up our fishing for the day as the sea' started to get rough, so Capt. Elmer headed the "Janie T VII” for the barn. In the meantime Captain Donald Roseman, on the "Top
