skill.
Their skills are exercised every time a call is made. "We mast not only he able to answer a tall effeciently, but also be able^to use and understand tfTe equipment." stated Mr. Haines, the Chief Engineer. "Learning to use the equipment is a skill alone l prefer having less men on the truck than having too many unfamiliar with the equipment. It just takes time and practice to learn." Fortunately, there haven't been any fatal accidents. However, there have been a few close calls "I remember one time we
were called to Dougherty’s Drugstore in Stone Harbor." recalled Mr Haines. "It was an electrical fire and when we arrived, the building was near to collapsing. We had just moved the truck to another blazing section when Uie entire wall collapsed where we had been parked." So what attracts a person to firefighting? "I suppose it is in my blood," continued Mr. Haines “Like anything, if you like what you are doing, you’ll give it your best shot and excel a I it. Also. I believe people should help others in a time of need." The Avalon Fire Department trians prospective firemen for 1214 weeks starting in September Entrants must be 18 or older and attend 60 percent of the drills, events, and fires within one year. The program is entirely volunteer.
