'FromPage D because of the gas scare. Patterson said. Also hard hit have been area restaurants. Many vacationers hoping to cut comers on some aspect of their trip exclude dining out, Patterson said. "Th6 Acme. A&P and take-out places are doing a bang-up business as a result." Ije added. The gas panic has calmed consideraly as reflected in the County Chaber of Commerce Gas Hotline service which keeps tabs daily on the availability of gasoline at area stations. Callers can quickly locate adequate supplies through the service, first initiated during the 1974 gas crisis. The Hotline received 876 calls during the week of Aug. 13-19 as opposed to 1,114 during the previous week and 1.584 during the first week of August. -Patterson said. "We should be all right on gas. ihough there may be some shortages toward the end of the month if we getreaihot weather." The i979 summer season has not turned out as bleakly in retrospect as everyone hod feared. Patterson said.

"At the time (early in the season) ^we didn't know how long people were going to sit back and react to the gas situation." Patterson

said.

"It would have been economically devastating if the trend (early summer) had continued," he added. But, the verdict is not yet in. the director said. Most people are going to make it and those who go under probably would have anyway, he said. “It's going to be an interesting summer. I don’t know what the outcome will be." Is this summer the beginning of a trend? “If the Administration leaves the gas alone, we'll be all right." Thomas said. “I think we’ll be all right." Hasson added. "There's a lot that can happen between now and next season." Patterson concluded. The South Jersey resorts will-have to adjush to the situation Whether it is long term or not. he said. "We will have to come up with new promotions and new vacation ideas." But. said Patterson, next time Cape May County will b4 ready for whatever colnes our way.
