Two columns ago, talked about the Stax reissue series, and how they were trying to keep their finest R&B music in print. Well, Stax isn’t the only soul label reissuing classic sides. The slicker, more urban Motown company from Detroit has a highly _praised "anthology" series, which we’ll hopefully deal with in the coming weeks. They’ve also taken to recycling complete albums on their Natural Resources sub-

sidiary.

Unfortunately, not all of

the albums deserve this treatment. For example, The Temptations' "In A Mellow Mood” is a collection of standards, such as "Hello Young Lovers.” "A Taste Of Honey," ”01’ Man River," "The Impossible Dream," and "That’s Life." that is bland and unemotional. Those who loved a song like the immortal "My Girl," will cringe hearing this ^ awkward album.* They could have picked a better long-player to , showcase the talent of The Temptations. .

The same can be said

about Marvin Gaye's "The Soulful Moods Of Matvin Gaye." The concept is simple,^ the music stays in a jaziy. nightclub groove and Marvin Gaye sings in a soft, compassionate voice. Just imagine the soundtrack for a nightclub scene from a lousy movie and you’ll know what this record sounds like. Why this, when there’s much

better to chose from? But. don't fret, 'cause

this project is far from- school being a complete washout, stars

Diarta Ross and The Supremes’ "Where Did Our Love Go” is a delightful album. "Baby Love," "Come See About Me." and the tittle track are enough to istir even the most stoic histener, but every track is /a joy. With their soaring, awesome voices. The Supremes could enhance

any tune.

the Four Tops-’ “Reach Out" would be a knockout with the title track alone, but add to that "Walk Away Renee." "7 Rooms Of Gloom," "Standing In The Shadows Of Love," and "Bernadette” and you have one of the most consiconsjstent and rewarding soul albums. How their rich, majestic

voices

popularity, I'll never understand, but the time is ripe for a Four Tops’

revival.

Then, there’s Smokey Robinson and The Miracles. The simple backing of JJJrll Try Something Ajew" is refreshing whwcompared to today’s )6sh disco standards. The purity of Smokey's always unique voice and warm moving songs will always compensate for studio sophistication. I sincerely doubt there are many who could avoid being deeply touched by Smokey Robinson’s gripping vocal on ‘Tve Been Good To You," and that goes for those who feel soul music is

old fashion.

Like Stax Records, the people at Motown have a past that’s worth being proud of. Fortunately for us, they’re both trying to share it with us by keeping this excellent souI/R&B music in print. Support these efforts by picking up a couple of these albums.
