Sione Harbor Shorelines By Jeannette O’May Landmarks in a village are fascinating history and today I am going to tell you about a couple of them in Stone Harbor. The Big Event on Aug. 1, 1912, was the opening of Shelter Haven Hotel. This was the largest single building in town and was the most elegant spot on the South Jersey coast. Formal attire was an absolute must in the dining room and affluent gentlemen arrived with their ladies in full regalia. In the ballroom downstairs "Flock Around the Clock" BUI Haley and His Comets were packing them in. Jack Stack, a former owner, tells me that this is where Bill got his start in show biz. Mr. Stack also relates that during Prohibition rumrunners brought the booze to the dock and it was stored on the top floor id the cupola. Sounds like a swinging story for sedate Stone Harbor! Peruse these prices from an old business card (circa the 30s) and you'll discover^ that taking a bath, privately, cost a few bucks. "Double room with private bath, $50 per week; double room, $30. Single room with private bath, $40 per week; without bath, $20.” Shelter Haven was completely rebuilt in 1961 under the ownership of Mr. Stack. The Hof Brau House is no more (a vacant lot stands at Third Ave. and 106th St.) but the spot will never be forgotten by the folks who spent many happy hours there. A menu of the "Seafood Palace of the Seven Mile Beach" was loaned me by Ted and Dick Owens, and I'm going to let you "eat your heart out" by mentioning'some of 'the goodies served there (about 40 years ago). "Special Shore Dinner" at $1.75 listed several appetizers, among them crab meat, shrimp cocktail, snapper soup, clam chowder and steamed clams with drawn butter. The entree was a whole broiled baby lobster, complemented with Julienne potatoes, cole slaw, celery and olives. And as a finale? Demi tasse, if you please! A dozen clams casino cost 75 cents and a ham sandwich 15 cents. A sloe gin fizz rocked you 35 cents, a glass of chablis 20 cents, a bottle of Ortlieb’s 15 cents and a mint julip 45 cents. If you felt like HvirM it up with an "after-difllfer" creme de menthe brotaght two bits. Oldtimers who really stepped out on Saturday night forked over a buck for entertainment and musk that was music! (incidentally, the phone number was 116.) I’ll be telling you about some other interesting Stone Harbor landmarks in future columns. Chicken Bar-B-Q STONE HARBOR - Stone Harbor Rescue Squad will hold its chicken Bar-B-Que Sunday Aug. 26 at the 80th St. ballfield 4 to 8 P Tickets are $4.50 and may be purchased at the ballfield.
