After listening to swordfish stories for two ycara/I finally got a chance to get out there and try this new type _of fishing on Captain Steve Rea’s •Bivo’’ with Joe Walls, of Linwood; Bob Trantor, of Brigantine; Bill Mengel, of Northfield; and Bob Hertzog, of Haddon Heights. Now, you might wonder why there is such a variety of addresses, but the reason for this is that Joe, Bob, Bill, and I work together in Guarantee Bank, and Bob Hbrtzog, who is with Campbell Soup Co., actually fished as much as he can in Cape may and Hatteras with me, a because he originally lived here in Cape May County. The ideal conditions for swordfishing is a nice, calm moonlit night, and Capt. Steve ordered that for Saturday night (our date for the trip), but it got here on Friday night when they had the Cape May Tuna and Marlin club swordfishing toumamenttheir 2\ boats caught 7 swordfish, and lost quite a few. The contest was won by the "R & T" captained by Dick Castellini. There were three swordfish taken that went over 300 pounds, and they also raised and released a lot of white marlin during the daytime hours when they weren’t

swordfishing.

The "Endless Summer”, which "Scottie’’ Smith Captain had 3 whites tp lead the club in this capacity. My information on all of this came from "Joey" Roseman, who was matingfbn Joe Walker's "Nancy-Marie". "Joey” said, "We don’t have anything you can write about we lost a big white marlin on a 50 Interrtational, and a big swordfish that broke off." I couldn’t realy agree with him, because some of the stories about lost fish are as gOdB as tales about the ones that are caught. Well, to get on with my story—we started out on the "Bivo” with Chris

Kobik, and Craig RJnkerman mating, and our game plan was to marlin fish Saturday morning, swordfish Saturday night, and marlin fish on the way in Sunday. Our first hook up as we started working our plan was with a giant tuna on the 40 fathom line that stripped off about 150 yards on the 1(H) Senator I was fishing, and then threw the hook; then Joe Walls had a big Wahoo that slashed up a double hooked split tail mullet, and somehow thieVboth those hooks, and tdk off. A little later a big Wmte got in our baits, and Cl)#is hooked up on him, and he started to run off line-then it went slack-Christ fed him line on a long drop back, and got him again, but after a short run he was loose; then he tapped a strip I was fishing, and left it just as suddenly as he appeared - after that he cleaned off Captain Steve who had a balao (ballyhoo) on a flat line; and finally he made a grand finale, and cleaned off an eel on Bill Mangel. Bob Hertzog was sitting on the bridge, and said it looked like a Chinese fire drill, and I guess that's about the best description that could be made nowadays. If Captain Ike Swain had been alive he would have had a more colorful description, but I wouldn’t have been able to put it in print anyway. I have to give credit where credit is due, though, Captain Steve put us on the fish, and his mate Chris was putting the right baits out, but we just couldn’t catch . those gamesters. (They’ll get bigger each time the story is told). There were some bfe whites around though, because Jim Lummis, on the "Fish N’ Fool" brought in a 91 pounder, and up on Wilmington canyon Capt. Joe Crowley on the “Electra" came back with a nice sized swordfish, a big wahoo, and eight yellow fin tuna. Of the seven "swords" that were taken Friday night I know they had one on the "5 Belles", the "Glass Machine”, the ''PursurerV^rntr the "5 Star”, but the real theory of swordfishing was shown to us by Captain Steve, and his mate Chris. They put a Cyalume light on each lure, with a breakaway weight, and about thirly foot of leader ahead of the lightthen Chriscarefully sewed a squid to the 12-0 hook that was on the end of the line - Capt. Steve explained that you fished thermoclyme for swordfish. We tried; but the SE wind at 18 to 20 knots just had us moving too fast to be effective, so the weather is a very important factor is this kind of fishing. For comparison Leonard Verity told me that he and Jack Osborne didn’t see a fish in the canyon the whole day Saturday and he’s caught a lot of marlin this year, and so has Jack. Inshore the flounder were biting, and so were the medium sized weakfish. Carl Zeller, on the "ChelSue" out of Roseman’f came in with 200 pounds of weakies and flounder. The day before our trip Bob Hertzog went^ out on

Captain Fenton Yearick’o "Fiesta", and had some nice flounder fishing with his family. On the morning 4 hour trip Captain Fenton loaded up on flounder right off of Diamond Beach Lodge (He still knows

about where Turtle Gut inlet used to be). Jerry Jerabek was in telling me that he and Wes Read were out off Jacksoti’s pier in the hay, and that he caught 3 nice weakfish in the IVfc to2 pound class on Saturday before the weather forced them to come home. Sunday Aug. 19 Wes and Jim Quigley got 42 weakies and 2 flounder out in the ocean near the target buoy that is a little way down from Cold Spring inlet South jetty.
