The name Ellen Foley might not mean much to you now, but I have a strong feeling a lot of you will be fans of here in the not too distant future. That’s a bold statement, but her debut album, “Nightout” (Epic) is one of those all-too-rare first efforts that grabs the listener on the very first note and doesn’t release its grip until the second side is
finished.
So, what does she sound like? Ellen Foley combines the best of the vintage girl groups, like The Shangrilas and The Ronettes, with a raw, high energy backing. Her clear, powerful voice fits perfectly with her choice of songs—including The Rolling Stones' “Stupid Girl” and Graham Parker’s “Thunder And Rain.” Ms. Foley also proves to be a capable songwriter, by penning the infectious “We Belong To The Night.” Some of the credit must be given to her producers, ex-Mott The Hoople leader Ian Hunter and Bowie’s former sidekick Mick Ronson. They’ve kept Ellen Foley’s voice in the fore, without submerging the band. Therefore, besides her engaging vocals, we have the stinging guitar of Mick Ronson and the flashy, yet steady, drumming of Hilly Michaels to add to the overall effect. Ellen Foley has paid her dues by being in “Hair” and singing background
vocals with Meatloaf. Now, on her own, she has the potential of being a star in her own right. However, Ellen Foley, as gifted as she is, would be wise to continue working with Ian Hunter and Mick Ronson, since the three of them make a perfect team. Since The Everly Brothers split, neither one has had much luck as a solo act. Phil Everly’s "Living Alone” won’t help matters. Even though he’s in fine voice, the disco arrangements seem out of place and his material isn’t consistent. Phil Evefly has talent, but, as a comeback effort, “Living Alone” isn’t going to do much for him. Maybe he should ring up Don and the two of them bury the hatchet? Graham Parker’s backing group, The Rumour, has just released its second album says Parker. Unlike the first, which was rather tedious, "Frogs. Sprouts, Clogs, and Krauts” (Arista) has a few nice pop tracks, most riotably “One Good Night.” Still, the overall sound is too thin to expect this to reach many people. Carole King’s daughter, Louise Coffin, seems to be on the verge of good things. Her first album, "Kid Blue" (Asylum), consists of smooth, rocking originals, which she sings in a confident voice. Only problem is her musicians aren’t as inspired as she is, but, with that in mind, Louise Coffin’s next record should be worth waiting
for.

We're Fighting Dock Against High Oil Costs
By March of this year, Atlantic Electric Knew thot the worldwide oil supply would reoch Its lowest point since the OPEC Oil Emborgo five years ago. And since that time, we've been taKing mojot steps to teduce the Impact of all the oil ptice increoses thot hove token place. Here's o look ot whot we've been doing: SWITCHING TO GAS • We’ve switched from oil to noturol 90s of one of (he oilfired units at our Deepwater Generating Station. Estimated savings: 100.000 gallons ofiresidupl oil o doy ond o total of 79.000 in June ond July alone.
SAVING OIL
• We’ve switched on oil-fired Combustion Turbine to noturol gos 01 Deepwater. Estimated savings. .000 fot the month of Xrly ond 1700 gallons of middle distillate fuel for each hour of operation. k
STICKING WITH COAL
• We mode design changes ond worked for government approval to prevent o switch from cool to oil while installing pollution control equipment ot our Dl. England Generating Station in Deesley's Point. Estimated savings: S04 million ond
over 100 million gallons of residual oil.
PLANNING AHEAD
• We stockpiled 31.000 tons of cool ot ouroO-flred Deepwater Station d$ o backup supply for D.L. Eng ration. all supplies should worsen ond the government be forced to relax environmentol rastiictlons. we could bum cool ot Deepwotet on on emergency bosls. Potentiol savings: H8
million o year, ond over 63 million gallons of residual oil o yeor. NUCLEAA POWER • We re working to get Salem II Nuclear Generating Station on line. The station, which hos been ready to produce electricity since Spring, hos hod its operation delayed by the federal moratorium on licensing new nuclear plants. Bringing Solem II go line before the end of this yeor could save our customers os much os S40.000 o doy in the cost of non-nucleor "replacement" fueis. EVEN WOOD CHIPS • We re trying to find new woys ot squeezing every ounce ot power our of the fuel we use. even if it means taking extraordinary sreps. We're even burning used lubhcoring oil ond wood chips or our 01. England Srorion. All of these savings will be reflected in rhe Energy Adjustment on your electric bill: it s extra money you won't hove to poy. Thot's the good news. Now for the bod. In spite of our efforts to keep fuel costs down, price increoses by foreign oil producers, olong with Gross Receipts ond Franchise Taxes, hove forced us to opply for on Energy Adjustment increase of tB5 million. As o result, your eleciric bills could incteose ot least 20% hi the near future. Energy conservation has olwoys been desirable. Now saving energy is on economic necessity. We'H shore the burden of cutting costs ond helping you find the best woys to conserve energy. It's out job ond we ll do out best.
