the opportunity of painting a human being. Some of the finest and worse paintings I have viewed and .executed are portraits. Many artists forget everything they have struggled to learn about adventurous viewing, pictorial structure, etc. whe faced with a patron who expects to be presented in a pleasant and flattering way. A painter who vigorously weilds a No. 10 flat bristle for bold strokes in a landscape may be found repainting the left nostril yet again with a 00 sable. The expression goes: “A portrait is a painting with something wrong with the mouth". When I occassionally find myself ill at easel, I clear the way for the artistic process by questioning my motives and tangible results. At thispointand no later, the query must be posed: "Is this good paintiqg?" There is more to consider in a portrait than shape of eyes, curl of hair, etc. A person is more than the sum of his features. Just as the gesture of a body expresses something about the personality, so does the placement of the figure within the frame set a certain attitude between model and viewer. There are certain, pictorial designs that work and some that don’t. A head in the middle of the canvas is static. If the portrait is to be monumeritakjuxi formal, this is'appropriate. If the subject is to show the ability to move and breathe, it is not. A frontal view may expose most of the facial surface, but something else can be revealed through the turning of the head. The size of the head in relation to the surface area determines how well the figure sits in the picture plane. (A friend of mine painted a portrait of her granddaughter from a school photo. This loving effort was labored over for weeks. Overconcern for likeness made her shortsighted in other ways: it was not until the painting was hung along the stairway that she realized that there is nothing endearing about a hovering 2 foot child’s head. Since we are considering the construction of a solod painting, we must not neglect the background. It can be neutral in tone and substance, suggestive of atmosphere, or descriptive of a setting. (Leonardo chose not to paml Mona against the high school state curtain, but has her calmly perched above a breathtaking panorama; Degas’ Absinthe Drinker is slouched over her glass in a dismal booth.) Extending our ideas about portraiture, we may also conceive our subjects doing something other than posing. The jogger may be running, the young girl combing her hair, the listener a color dot in a concert crowd scene. A portrait has no limits to its conception or execution save that which we impose. It may even exclude the
