The solution to this week’s puzzle will appear in next week’s issue. Panthers Practice Starts
The Panthers are practicing in earnest now. Saturday saw the initial day of two sessions. First at 8 a.m.! And only two players were late. The second session was in the cool of the evening 6 p.m. Helmets were worn and blocking pads were inevidence. If there’s one important evidence of things to come, it’s togetherness. Every thing that happens is for the good of the team. There are no cliques, no stars, everyone is on an equal level. And the coaching staff is one big happy family, from
the “Great Dictator," on down through the “Greek God" and "Mr. America" and “Mr. Discipline" to the rookie “Harpo". A feeling of comraderie is allpervading. And the players respect their coaches. They’ll do anything they’re asked to do because they know it’s for the good of the team. It’s not a military training thing like they have at Lower Cape May, but a voluntary willingness to comply. With such a spirit, how can the season be anything but a* successful one?
Gloria's, Kona Softball Champs
In the play-offs for the championship of the County Slo-Pitch Softball League Gloria's Saloon defeated Kona Sporting Goods in the final game 201. Although giving up 10 hits, Gloria’s pitcher Jerry Griffin, held Kona’s to one
It seemed like everything went right for Gloria’s and everything wrong for Kona’s. The batting stars for the winners were Sam
Rhodes and Rick Burka, each with 3 hits including a home run, and Jimmy Riddle and Wayne Mazurek with 3 hits each. Gloria's defense was a team effort as they wiped out Kona's base runqers, permitting only 1 run to come in. This winds up the season for Kona’s who deserve credit for finishing second in a strong league. Gloria's will play in a tournament held this week in Pleasantyille.

Apologies to Frank Klebauer for misspelling his name. Even though the Old Sport’s wife is of German descent, he still has trouble with those Teutonic names. It won’t happen again, Frank! Softball expert Keith Seaman, is limping around with a knee brace, the restilt of an accident sustained in a softball game with Cape May Fire Co. Harry Back, claims to know more about softball then the Big Water Buffalo, but the Old Sport attributes all he knows about softball to the tutelage of Keith. Rick Harmon has finally made his choice of a collage. He has matriculated at Old Dominion Univ. in Virginia. He has to sit out this year but held their team for the next two years. In case you’re wondering about Old Dominion, it has over 31,000 students and ranked in the top twenty last year. Rick will continue his course in criminolygy and will get a chance to attend a Police Academy there. Good to know that Chick Ludman will continue at the helm of the Middle Twp. High School basketball program. Denny Anderson, last season’s freshman coach, will lay the foundation for Chick’s system at the Middle School where he will coach the 7th and 8th graders. The future looks great for Panther basketball. Maybe a dynasty will be established. Andrew Garcia is chafing at the bit at the Widener College Football Camp. The coaches have made him a defensive back v , instead of line-backer where he excelled for last years Panther Varsity. Kathy Douglass, Middle female athlete, will also be at Widener this year (Humm! Could there be a romance here?) Outstanding players in the Men's Basketball League in Avalon were> Billy Soens artd Craig Realty. Chuch Stevinsky and R. Thompson of Barber's Nursery, Joe Kane and Fred Rasmunsin of Bock’s Raiders, Jack Bucci of Green Cuisine, Terry Corrigan of 1st People Bank and Timmy Arizin o# Marine International, who has a great name to live up to. Remember Paul Arizin of Phila. Warriors fame? It’s great to see coaches get along as well together, the way the Middle Twp. staff does. This observer has seen so many incidents of undercutting the head coach and petty jealousies that it is refreshing to see and hear how well these men get along., Injured List a Ray Marshalrand Keith Seaman are having minor difficulties getting the team doctor’s O K. to play, but they should be ironed out soon.
Can’t anyone do anything about the gnats at Memorial Field? Clarence Davies is a master at keeping the field in shape. Why can’t he control the gnats. Talk to 'em, Dave! John ^Kerman must be proud father number two as he watched Kevin, his son, blast the ball in the final game of the KiwanisFire Co. Series. Kevin is certainly one of the finest all-around athletes in the county as he excels in softball and basketball. Dutch Arenberg got out to wdteh Panther football and saw his son, Danny, “The Amazin’ Kreskin" perform. The Panther back is quick but lite and the old sport would like to see a big blocking back in there with Leo Collins, Chris Nichols and Buddy Bailey. The walking wounded at present consist of Ken McDermott and Steve Walker. Hopefully they'll be running soon. The "great dictator" Phil Exle'y, will get his cohorts down to serious business- with double sessions Saturday and I^londay and then back to <nne a day when school opens. *’*' Andy Garcia has made the JV. Squad at Widener as a defensive back and line backer. He is home and refBmes practice Sept. 4.
