Sounds

By Charles P. Lamey ;

The Knack certainly have taken the pop world by storm. A few months ago, they were a Los Angeles club band, and today they have the humber one single and album. Although some have begrudged their quick rise to the top, the plain, simple truth remains. The Knack are a good band with a glowing future ahead of them. •Get The Knack” (Capitol) is a highly enjoyable pop-rock album. Berton Averre and Doug Fieger write short, catbhy tunes that have been inspired by The Beatles, Byrds, and Beach Boys. Doug Fieger sings them in a strong, confident voice, which is, fortunately, never obtrusive. The instrumentation is basic-just two guitars, a bass, and drums, yet, thanks to superstar producer Mike Chapman (Nick Gilder, Blondie, Suzi Quatro, etc.) the sound is overwhelmingly powerful. All in all, The Knack have a smashing debut. As> soon as ‘'My Sharona’* starts to slip, there are enough potential hits, most notably “Let Me Out” and "Maybe Tonight,” to lake up the slack. As the title says, "Get The Knack." Sparks continue to be more popular in England than their U.S.A. Perinatal Care Meeting BELLMAWR - The Cape May Council of the Southern New Jersey Health Systems Agency (HSA) will hold its September meeting Wednesday. September 12. The meeting will be preceded by the opening of scheduled hearings the HSA has called for on its recommendations to regionalize perinatal care for southern New Jersey. The meeting will be held At the Social Building, Routes 47 and 9, Rio Grande, with the hearings opening at 7 p.m. According to Cape May Council officials, a perinatal system for the region is designed to be an integrated program of maternal care and infant health services. The HSA seeks to improve the present system through complete regionalization. Historical Yard Sale PETERSBURG - A yard sale will be held Saturday, Sept. 8 at 10 a.m. to benefit the Historical Preservation Society of Upper Township. The sale will be at Entriken’s, Rt.

homeland, and it's doubtful "No. l In Heaven” (Elektra) will change that. It's rtot a bftd^Bjum, mind you, but it should have been a lot better. Ron Mael has composed some quirky pop tunes, but. instead of being short and snappy, like before, they’re long and directionless. Sparks have talent, but their material needs editing. .Brian Eno has worked with everyone from Roxy Music to Talking Heads, 'yet his own solo projects have been ignored •. 'Ambient l. Music For Airports” (PVC) consists of quiet, restful pieces, written with the idea of relaxing instead of stimulating the listener. Brian Eno is trying to make daydreaming colorful, and he succeeds with this long-player, although, at the present time, this is only for a limited audience. Ten years after Woodstock^ and the lead guitarist of Country Joe and The Fish is still out their playing his music. Bany Melton’s "We Are Like The Ocean" (Music IS Medicine) is a fine solo outing. With a strong background in folk, blues, flitintry, and rock and roll, Barry Melton's music has depth and is played with passion. He’s an underrated guitarist, too. Maybe he's not slick enough for the masses, but Barry Melton still warrants at-

tention.
