MIKE'S FISH AND SEAFOOD MARKET

I (hink I would be un- • derstating it if I said that we d had some mightly unsettled weather in these last two weeks; however, as had as the weather has l>een at times; with scattered thunderstorms, and winds coming up almost every afternoon; there have been some periods of relatively calm weather, and the anglers who could get out there during these nice spells have caught some very nice fish. I^ast weekend '‘Jerry” Jerabek, of Del Haven, was telling me that he and Wes Head had decided not logo, because the weather that day looked very threatening, and just as he was getting ready to leave home to go up to the Villas, his neighbor. Bill Gais was on his way out of his drive trailenng his boat; and asked Jerry” if he'd lilp to go along Jerry" said he declined with thanks - he was awfully sorry that afternoon, through, when Bill pulled in with 50 nice sized weakfish and 2 flounder.

f I was talking with George I^ewis, who runs a boat out of Cape Island's West Basin, and he told me that he gotten a good catch of flounder over in the Anchorage. Bob Neely said that he and his fishing butydy. Charlie Kennedy picked up 40 good sized weakfish. and 2 flounder fishing off No. 2. No. 9 and No. 10 buoy in the Bay, so there have been some good catches in that area. The biggest catch I heard of last week was made by Marcy May - she was fishing with Jim Solly on their boat the “Jim-Mar", and she hooked and landed a 247 pound sand tiger shark in the 60 foot slough inside of Brandywine shoal She was just a pound under the biggest shark taken in the Inn Shark fishing contest, which puts her in second place, but she’ll probably win the women's division walking away with that big mon ster. Walt Hendee, of Stone Harbor, was telling John Fisher, Tony Vistenzo, and I how he fishes for big sharks in the Ocean. I always thought he fished for them off the NE end or around 2FB buoy, but Walt said that was to close in. and that he usually tries out around the 28 mile wreck, he likes to fish for them from 5 o’clock in the evening on into the dark of the night, because the big sharks are nocturnal feeders. Walt has caught some mighty big sharks each season, so he ought to

have a pretty good idea jusl where to fish for them. We were all together over at Jack's Place in Avalon planning for the third annual Cape May Co. Hatteras Anglers surf fishing tournament, which will be held on the Ayalon beach on September 8lh & 9th in cooperation with The Avalon Chamber of Commerce-so far there are eight teams entered in this contest, so there should be some good competition this year. On Sunday the 9 it will be individual competition, so all you surf men who are getting your gear ready - come on over! You could wind up with a nice

trophy.

John FiSher. Andy Grace. aim^Twere up in* Brigantindfeunday at the Fishing Mmnaids on that beach, anlft we ran into some foul weather which didn't help the surf fishing. We represented the Cape may Co. Hatteras Anglers, and Andy Grace was the only successful angler amongst us. as he fought a calico crab all the way into the beach. First place was won by The Atlantic City Tuna Club surf team - second went to the South Jersey Anglers, and third place went to the Brigantine sportsmen. We wound up in a tie for fourth place with the other fourteen teams competing (they didn't catch any fish either), so I wouldn't say the surf fishing was red hot that day. The only thing that was rewarding was the fresh air. and the surf. It is getting to be a good time for surf fishing though, as the golden days of September start to beckon us to the beach, and the holiday crowds start to diminish. Cap! Hiram Thompson was in telling me about how Capl Al Delinski was showing him how to find wrecks on the "Big Jim ll” Hirmah said they had a full party one day last week, and they got a heavy catch of big sea bass on a wreck near FA buoy, in fact he said they were the biggest sea bass he’d seen in years, i couldn't figure this out too well, because I'd been seeipg a lot of bass pots out past five fathom light, and I figured there must have been a lot of sea bass, in quantity, in that area. Capt. "Hi” said this wasn't noeoMarily so because the Bass pot fishermen haven’t had too great a season. It seems that those big slammer blues that have been around in abundance have kept the Bass,on the move, and they've been seeking out wrecks because the big blues won't go near them when they nestle in the ruins under the sea. I've got a lot to learn about this type of fishing, but I'd sure like to do some of it in the

future.

Hiram also told me that Captain Frank Cassedy on the “Lady Grace" has been doing real well on the punk grounds in the Bay on flounders for his parties, and recently he's been catching some big flatties on Somers shoal. It's about time for this type of flounder fishing to get real good when the weather will let you fish.
