AVALON — The beaches in Avalon were officially closed Sept. 9, meaning that there will no longer be lifeguard protection df the beaches. The season which began on the Memorial Day weekend was a suciful one for all the jjousands who got a Jeautiful, deep tan on the borough’s strand. • When the crowds thin and the gulls populate the beaches again, there will be something to guard the beaches against winter storms and wind erosion. What is this curious force that helps Avalon's beaches together? Beachgrass. of courts! p Many of Avalon's residents who recently flocked to the beaches to ’ view the ocean swelled by Tropic Storm David got a glimpse of the 'thin green margin' atop the borough’s sand dunes waving in the ‘high wind.’ These millions of plants were helping to guard Avalon's dunes and beaches. Without these humble green plants, sand would have nothing to cling to and would be easily blown or washed
away.
School children and adult volunteers annually help to plant insignificant looking little ‘dune grass plugs' in Me winter and early ing. It is not until one the positive results of tp^se millions of beachgrass plants that one admires their job. Some thing it simply child's play to help plant these little plants, but the job they do for every resident of the borough makes their planting a real civic responsibility. According to County Agricultural Agent Larry Newbold, beachgrass is a hearty plant which can be implanted anytime a spade can go into the sand. Plating times are best suited for humans in the warmer days of late winter and early spring. Annually, after the Avalon adult volunteers and school children have planted their thousands of plants, aerial fertilizing takes place. , This and careful walking by eager beachgoers helps the plants to thrive. Although the beachgrass plants are hearty, they cannot sustain the footsteps of humans since they easily break the root systems.
Avalon has long taken a very active role in' helping to-plant, and replant beachgrass each year. Credit ^ for the organization of planting goes to Ute members of the Avalon Environmental Commission who work long, haixi hours getting volunteers and *thenR spending time on the* beachfront during the planting. Additional aid is giVen by the borough with
trucks and personnel

CAPE HOUSE — Plans are completed for the Gala Annual Cape May County Republican Picnic, io be held Sunday, September 16, according to Phil Matalucci, Republican County Chairman. "We are anticipating a ’ crowd of 10,000 for the event scheduled at the Cape May County Park from 1 to 5 p.m. Truck loads of food are ordered or prepared. The menu includes Barbecue CTiicken, Corn on the Cob, Fresh Jersey "Tomatoes and other refreshments’V Matalucci stated. This is a grand old fashioned picnic where everyone is invited to meet our Republican Candidates. Republican Assemblyman James R. Hurley and Joseph W. Chinnici and Republican Freeholder Candidate Jack Bittner will be on hand to meet and greet the large turnout expected, as well as, local republican candidates from throughout the County. Games, contests for yound and old alike, as well as bands, entertainment and fun for all are the order of the day. A small donation of $2 is charged for the food at the event. "Over the years, the Cape May County Republican Organization has Held this picnic to give everyone a chance to meet our candidates and discuss issues. We feel that an event like this excludes no one and everyone is welcome. The Cape May County Republican Organization is for all the
people and we want their participation. It is a time, in a relaxed atmosphere, that candidates and the voters can get together", Matalucci stated. "We also think of this event as a thank you to our workers, supporters and friends in advance of the election. We urge everyone to bring their family, that is one reason it is held at the County Park; because of the recreational facilities for the young folks. This is ope of the best ways of our candidates to be accessable to a large number of people at one time", the Republican Chairman stated. The rain date is September 23.
