I^bor Day weekend was one at the moat productive weekend* we'ye had in this ieasori: It may have been becai*e at the approach at Tropical storm David, on it may have been because of the near-nes* to the full moon, but whatever the cause, a lot of anftlers caught a lot of fish. Big blues bit well in the’ ocean Marlin were taken in the Canyon-Flounders were caught in good quantity in the 60 foot plough, and on Somers *hnal at the mouth of the Bay. and weakfish took hold all over the hay, and in cloae to the beach in the ocean I'm getting a little too general, thoutfi. on my

story, so let me go into detail a little on some of

these catches.

.First, on Saturday and Sunday there was the $5,000 Blue Marlin Open tournament sponsored by The South Jersey Fishing and Hunting Center, Cape may The first day .produced quite a few white maNin. but there was only one 100pound blue marlin caught, and that was by a boat that wasn't in the contest. On the second day.however, it was a different story as Joan Cosgrove from New York, fishing on the bqat "Snow Escape,'' captained

tournament

Captain Dick Weber said he believes that this is the biggest blue marlin ewer taken from the port of Cape May, and I believe he's right. Captain "Ike" Swain had a 513 pound, blue out of (^gpe may from "Scotties” marina, but that was a lortg time ago. It should be a state record, too, but Captain Dick said the stiite does not accept women's entries (he's going to try to enter it anyway). Sunday inshore was a good fishing day too, but there were a few thunderstorms around at the

with lightening out at Somers shoal, and they said a small boat got all lit up too, with one of those flasher from the sky. On the Janie TV II Capt. Hiram Thompson, his son George, Ronnie Tompkins, "Jerry" Jerabek, and I left Roseman's at 6 o'clock, and headed for the 60 foot slough where they had caught some nice flounder Saturday. About halfway deep water we something on finder, so we stc put our lines oiit. In no time at all we had eight nice' flounder, but then we lost our drift pattern, so we had to continue out to the 60 foot water. We didn’t find many flatties there, but "hi" Thompson latched on to a big doormat . that must have weighted at least 6 pounds, and that turned out to be the biggest fish of the day. The big flattie was biting on Ron Tompkins line but left Ronnie to get caught by Hiram (I can still hear Ronnie crying). After an hour of almost non-productive fishing we decided to head up the Bay and found a fleet of Delaware boats fishing on west side of the shipping lane off of 14 foot light. We only picked up some small weakfish in that location, 4o we decided to head for Somers shoal, and fish the flood tide there. We had only gotten about halfway there when we saw a large storm making up out in the ocean, and this made us decide to try on the outside part of the Rips where we caught four blue sharks. The storm continued to grow, so we headed for the barn, and when we counted our catch we had 12 flounder, 6 weakfish, and 2 bluefish.

and even though I couldn't find Captain Steve Rea, I learned that most of the charter boats had loaded up on Slammer Blues, some as high as 17 pounds out at FA buoy. I then continued on down to South Jersey Fishing and Hunting Center and listened to Don Murphy telling about how he and Jack Osborne had been deluged with white marlin bites on the 37 fathom line. Later on I saw Capt. Rudy on the "Lady Collette" weigh in A 44'* pound wHite marliiytor the tournament. f Well, on Sunday Ronnie Tompkins and f (fecided to go fishing on the "Ron-

EH", and we wound up with 15 nice weakfish on the upper end of headman’s Shoal. We followed Captain Fenton Yearicks on the "Fiesta" out, and he found a good spot with weakfish biting so we stayed near his ■ boat until he had to leave to go back in with his four hour |>arty. This left us without a guide, but we were catching fish, so it didn’t make^ any difference. Our day started off strangely, ‘because as I started up the side of the "Ron-EU" to get the Bow Lines I slipped on the side deck, and went overboard
