today Totio Eckert’s Thunderbird skidded on the slick Scotch Bonnet Bridge and plunged into the channel. The huge banner waving in front of Shelter Haven which proclaimed •Totie Eckert at the Piano” was brought down ; our town was in mourning. Totie was a delightful person and a queen of entertainers. She packed them in with her hilarious singa longs and original acts. I especially enjoyed the one with the bartenders going through the routine of "Balling The Jack.” Totie will be fondly remembered for a long, long time. Incidentally, Jack Stack tells me that her given name was Roberta. I became smitten with Stone Harbor fever 20 years ago when a friend of my husband’s offered us his place at 88th Street on
the beach. The magnificent Atlantic Ocean was at our front door, and we would sit on the upper deck with binoculars and watch the ships- go by. job clearing the debris from the streets. Within a week construction began on a new stone and timber bulkhead. This project cost a cool million and extended from 80th Street to 114th Street. The lovely promenade on the beach from 80th to 83rd Streets also took shape at that
time.
In those days we never ventured beyond H4th Street; except from Third Avenue, the roads were unpaved and the dunes were wild with seagrass and bramble bushes. Nearly all of the lovely homes nearer the Point were built within the last decade. The "upsidedown” houses became more and more popular and some dwellings appeared as architects’ dream (or nightmares, > depending on- one’s tastes in architecture). Whether a year-rounder ) or a summer-timer, you’ll' always find a perfect pJJ& in Stone Harbor.
