Harbor Plans Dock Storage . STONE ihrflBOR - Ovel- the yeaVs -homeowners have h/ad contractor^ take their .. floating docks and ramps from the water at the end of the season and store them on street ends or other
public property.
This has not been in the best interest of neighboring properties and in some instances they have been fire hazards Therefore. Under the new ordinance docks and ramps will be permitted to be stored on Ihe parking area of the public marina at 80th to 32nd streets from Oct. 1 to
May 15.
A storage license shall be required to be obtained by the person who shall deliver a dock or ramp to storage The storage license fee fo* each dock and ramp shall be $15. Acme, the proposition of a trip to Cape Cod so attacked my roots that I
almost did not dare.
Reassured that I would not lose sight nor sound of my beloved Atlantie which whets my senses daily. I prepared for the excursion and geared myself towards
water colors.
An artist sets out on an adventure, knowing that her vision will he altered. The trip out was made in five shuttles; some driving, three take-offs and landings (six breath holdings); scenery changing at an eyeboggling rate. Contours of Earth subdued to a tabletop ma^/^ored with the inaccesifle beauty out there, I’afetched heads on mental ffclper, then turned to considering the bulk of working materials stuffed under the forward seat. I had packed in a rush of excitement (which seems to be my M.O.) so I ran through what I had remembered, which was far more than I needed. An artist who paints on location faces challenges which arc not experienced within the shelter of a studio. One must be prepared for events without predetermining the outcome. Materials arc selected according to their simplicity and function. Pencil for tone; rapidograph pen for line; watercolor for hues. A wet medium calls for the inclusion of other tools; a handful of brushes rolled in a bamboo mat; watercolor blocks; one 7x9”. the other loo big, poling, glaring, bending. (I’ve learned since that "grande scale" does not mean size of paper). Supporting that approach and adding considerable weight was a butcher’s tray, padded with paint rags and enclosed in a case to pfcptect

forthative.imput, a earner? was also brought along. More important than supplies is the readiness to work which must stand up to the disorienting force which overwhelms us when we view or paint something new. We may have a style as a basis for working which helps to temper what we see: we may bfe looking for a particular aspect of a thing or compare it with other things seen. There must be motivation, direction, and the" discipline which comes
from practice.
Despite all preparations and though I am used lo seeing .beauty daily, I was taken aback, at the scale of the Cape, ahd the placidity which rung inland from the haihorod Jbcachcs through the dunesr to the town which had no'golden arches, but a continuing arbor of rhses. Each glance was framable but one particular site drew me back again and again. The scene was sketched and painted and photographed at different times of day during the course of a week. Each clement of the picture was viewed under varying conditions; the intensity and angle of the light, the ebb of the tide, the attitude
of the artist.
Other sketches were made in various locations; a shuttered window, the rim of a glass, a face in profile, a connect the dot design in the firmament. Pencil and paper need not always be present for marks to be made. At work now in the home studio, the artist seeks to assimilate these imprints and contain them within an 18x24” border. And refreshes herself by looking up the coast to the
Cape.
