Good Morning, America, this is Stone Harbor, New Jersey/. Oh, what a memorable August afternoon when 200 exhuberant beach people were being filmed for appearance on nationwide TV. Making history was Don Titlow's sand sculpture, "Go&d Morning, America," a melange of early risers—roosters canine, toaster and alarm clock, topped by a remarkably authentic likeness of GMA host, David Hartman. Mr, Titlow has been sand sculpting on the beaches of Stone Harbor for three decades. You name it. Don has done it. as can be verified by the fascinating scrapbook kept by his wife, Claire. . x The Titlows hail ’from Norristown. When Don appeared on the tube two week ago it was his first time on national TV, although several years ago UPI sent a photo of one of his creationsto newspapers all over the nation. Sand sculpting is quite an art Don explains that the sand must b£ exactly right in texture and moisture in« order to make such a masterpiece. He uses only what the sea gives us for the finishing touches, such as pebbles, shells and seaweek. What's up for

19B0, Don?

There is no escaping it; winter’s on its way. When the last of my dear summer friends says goodbye, I

know it's over. The air Has a feel of fall crispness in it’ ’ the quietude is deafening. There, .'are no laughing children splashing in the surf, no suntanned>sweetsixteeners with radios blaring. The racquet balls are silent, the frisbees have ceased spinning. , the dogeared paperbacks have done their duty. The gulls look a little forlonv-no scraps from picnic baskets (or goodies from grills!) But the sandpipers love the solitude. These shy littlecreatures never venture onto the beach when it is crowded. John J. Gillespie of Narberth put it so poignantly in The Bulletin of September 3. He penned “Why Labor Day Hurts." At the close of his lament he simply states: "We can’t hold seashelLs to our ears forever." So true! But—time does fly! And before we realize it. our fabulous Jersey Shore will be fn full bloom again. So hang in there, baby! I wonder if Don Titlow has ever sculpted a; "September Swan Song"?
