This last weekend showed that along 'the beaches suH men should do • well £rom now on. Over in Avalon The Cape May Co. Hatteras Anglers - Avalon chamber of Commerce’s surf fishing tournament produced 72 fish in the first morning’s fishing. Weakfish were in abundance along with snapper blues; and surprisingly enough there were 15 kingfish showed up in that morning catch. • ; The winners in tlje local tournament, which is sponsored by the National Association of Surf Angling dubs, were the fishing Mermaids of Atlantic City with 112 points-they were .closely followed by the tgeach Haven Surf Fishing Club with 107 points who took second place. The New Jersey Beach Buggy Association almost nosed out Beach Haven with 106 points to come in third. It was one of the most productive tournaments that ithc Cape May Co.Hatteras Anglers and the Avalon Chamber of Commerce have put on yet, atid this is theic third year at this promotion. Largest Fish, trophy was w/»n by Frank Marrone, of the Ocean City Surf Fishing Club. Frank had a 24” weakfish, and that’s a nice catch In anybody's book. General chairman for the • vent was John Fisher, of North Cape May. who was assisted by Ed Wright, of the Avalon Chamber of Commerce John's co chairman was Bill Halhruner, of the Villas, and they did a real good job. Headquarters for the contest, and for the fishermen was Jack's Place in Avalon, and owner Jack ferkert went all out to provide a good spot for the surf anglers to congregate, it proved one thing, and that is that surf fishing is about to come into its own here on the Jersey Cape, and it’s time to get your surf gear out. and make sure it’s ready for the fall run of fish on our beaches. Oh the second day of the

tournament the wind blew real hard out of the NbrthNortheast, and most of the fish Were, caught in at JaclA place by the anglers who Were waiting for result’s to come off the beach. The big winner was Jack Davis of South Jersey . Anglers with a 17" bluefish. He took the most fish, and the biggest fish award with his catch. I rode the bjach with Frank Giampi, of •Burleigh, who was on the Hatteras Anglers bea£h committee, and we noticed a big bunch of king crabT on the beach. Frank remarked that this is becoming more and more a problem in the Ocean. We could not remember this happening in the past; in fact Ocean authorities have just come out with the fact that king crabs shed their shells, and it actually is a lot of empty shells that are littering our beaches. You usually associate king crabs with the Bay, but it seems the Ocean is their habitat too. Now the next problem for you surfmen is bait. Mussels are available near the bend m the sounds off the Rio Grande boulevard, and fingerling mullet should bCi^iropping out of the soungtr any time now. It's betHtto keep in touch with yodT local bait store now. be^Use they usually have a supply on a day to day basis. Hot spots from about September 15 on arc ’ Poverty Beach, Stone Harbor Point. Cape May

Point and the Avalon side of Townsends Inlet on the point. Boat fishing will still be good through September, too. for it’s near IS time for those sounds ( weakfish to start dropping out of the inlets, and the big slammer blues are still offshore-look for kingfish to show up somewhere too, after the showing on the Avalon Beach-Stripers are another species ^pit will. start shojvihg- around. the Jetties, and dmATi in the rips # and they’ll be good from either surf or boat. ^ One species I haVen’t mentioned in any.of niy w^tfngs is-the croaker-in the last few weeks more and more of these good eating fish have been showing up both in the Bay " and in the Ocean. Walt Hardy, of the Villas, dropped me a note showing a Cape May County entry card for Alex Caldwell, who registered a 3 pound 8 oz croaker taken In Delaware Bay while fishing on the boat "Ketch Me”.
