It's taken ten years too long, but Nick Lowe, thanks to his fast rising . single "Cruel To Be Kind," is about to crack the American market. After slagging about in the puk rock outfit Brinsley Schwarz for several albums. Lowe instantly found fame in his English homeland as a solo performer with the hit "So It Goes," and as a producer of several artists, most notably Elvis Costello and Graham Parker. But, what really started things rolling was his teaming up with veteran rocker Dave Edmunds to co-lead Rockpile. Unforlunately. due to Lowe belonging to Columbia and
Edmunds to Swan Song, they’ve yet to make e Rockpile album. Instead, there’s Edmunds backed by Rockpile and then Lowe, on his record, is the frontman. Confusing? Well, don’t wori7 about it. 'Hie music is what counts, and Lowe’s second album, "Labour of Lust” (Columbia) is, like his first and all of Dave Edmunds’, a complete joy. Nick Lowe uses simple, basic arrangements to support his infectious melodics. By doing this, the sound is loose and natural - the way the best rock and roll always has been. Nick Lowe is a master of short, catchy tunes, which

hark back to the sixties, yet somehow sound modem. It’s about time the States have caught up to this man, and now, maybe people will check out his early yrork, which stands up to the fine music he’s making today. It's taken awhile, but Nick Lowe is here to stay. Quickly following the release of Philadelphia's The Reds, we have The A’s. Their debut (Arista) is full of agressive musicianship ‘ and angry vocals. For the most part, the material is solid, with three of the songs, "After Last Night," "Parasite," and "Words" k ranking with the best released this year. .However, The A’s are sometimes bogged down with meandering arrangements, which is the kiss of death, as The A’s depend on disciplined tension to make their music work. Nevertheless, this is a highly promising album, which, along with their dynamic live show, indicates The A’s have a bright future ahead of them. Jonathan Richman and The Modern Lpvers’ "Back In Your Life" (Beserkley) is their most cohesive work since their overwhelming debut. Jonathan is still writing childlike tunes, which border on being insipid. but the arrangements are pure emotional rock and roll and Richman's voice is warm and passionate. He’ll never record another album like his first one. but this will do nicely. The Rollers (formerly The Bay City Rollers) have come up with their finest moment, yet. "Elevator" (Arista) is a near-perfect pop album. The vocals are sung with authttity and the tunes, especially the title track and "Hello and Welcome Home," stand up to anything that's currently on the charts. Only complaint is the overblown and • ' pretentious. "Back On The Road Again." Still, The Rollers' "Elevator" is worth checking out.
It’s worth the trip.
