I spoke last week of observing the fishing scene, but this week I can report on actually being on the spot, and some experiences you can only tell about when you've actually been there, and observed the fishing first hand First, though, let me tell you of a canyon trip Len Verity had on the "Linda Rith”. which I didn't take part in. Len was out there last Firday with his son l>eonard Jr, and a couple of other anglers They went way out into the deep waier, and raised 7 marlin,

Ocean, and Capt. Steve knew he was going to be offshore after big bluefish ! wasn't quite sure what I was going after, but right after leaving Steve I watched Capt IJeds on the Partyboat "Pilot” decking with his party, and they had a load of big weakfish that they'd caught up off

and landed iwo Leonard^ 1|!lrbor

Jr got them both; theyalso , hurrifd over l0 Jim

a, caught two yellow fin Tuna S in the 40-pound range, and 2

dolphin, which makes up v quite a fishing trip.

| Now, back to my own S personal - "contact On $ Saturday. , after work, V ® made my usual swing past

the party boats at''Cape Island West Basin; apd found Captain Steve Red there on the ”Bivo"-Ste'VeJ hadn't been out that day, because it was too rough offshore, but he had an offshore party for Sunday, so we talked about how we could contact each other the next day I knew I was going to be inshore in the

Wallace's to get some squid for bait. On my way back I watched Capt. Bob Hitchner, oh the "Thunderbird” unload a party with more big weakfish. aria he's been up Hereford way to. Then Capt. Walt Schick, on the "Nada Jane” pulled in with another good sized party, and outlined the same area right after that the “Miss Chris" unloaded a happy party, and another load of weakies, so I knew where I was going Sunday. John Magnarro, of Dias Creek, “Jerry” Bohunk Jerabek, of the Villas, and I had made plans to go, and Bo,b Hertzog had called, and said he >vas bringing his grandson down; so at 6 am. we all met at, Roseman’s, and were all set to go, except that Bob had hurt his back on ^he way down, and Richie, his grandsofT decided to stay

on the tkwk with him. We cleared the inlet on

the Janie TVH at 6:30 a.m. and headed North for Hereford in a fairly heavy sea. although the wind wasn't blowing real hardHurricane David and F redrick still had the water riled, and it did much to make a heavy chop. We arrived at Hereford about 7; 15, and found Capt. Steve, and the "Bivo" already there bailing fish, so we dropped in behind his drill, and started catching fish right away (it was still rough^offshore, and Steve had wisely chose tb fish inshore). A couple of other boats worked in near us, and they also were having bent rods all over their boats. We had the area all to ourselves for about an hour, and in that

time John. Jerry, and l scored several times with 3 to 5 pound weakfish. Squid and minnows wefe working Very well for us for bait. A few more boats joihed us from Cape May, and some started coming out of Hereford frqjk Stone Harbor We Jfcard Capt. Tom Robertjwy the "My Gal" on our C®. Tom was up around Diamond Beach, so we called him, and told him to come on down. Suddenly the Ocean was full of boats from every where-the “Rebel B." appeared, the “Pilot” was there- the Miss Chris came by, and everybody was catching weakfish. In case I haven’t made myself clear, the fall run of weakfish off Hereford has started, and they are there along with flounder, snapper blues, and pan size blues. We caught a couple of these pan-sized ones, and immediately cleaned them for bait- as soon as John Magnarro got overboard with a strip of bluefish he had the prize of the day hooked-a 7 pound weakfish that really gave him tussleabout noon, after a steady pick the-fire went out as slack tide came upon us, so we drifted with the wind past the bell buoy off Hereford, and started home. About halfway home a clatter started in our engine, Wiich sounded like valves chattering, so we cut the motor, and added a. can of oil. When we tried to* start up again we found the clatter had been our starter which was froze up, so there we were; halfway home with no power. We threw our anchor, and put in a call to Capt. Robertson the “My Gal", wfto said he would be by soon, and tow us in. We figured that we were really Jn trouble, so we switched to channel 9, and called a mayday to the Coast Guard-the air was jammed, but our call was intercepted by S. Cape React, who said they would call the Coast Guard on a land line-in no time at_all the Coast Guard came back to us, determined our position, and started a rescue boat to us. The 41 footer from the Coast Guard, and Captain Tom arrived at the same time-the Coast Guard team threw a line to us, and started hauling us back to Roseman’s. Those search and rescue boys can realiy handle a boat in trouble and they really did a beautiful job of getting us home safely. In fact, we probably got home faster than we would under our own power. It's no fun to be broke down on the water, but with & search and rescue team like we have in Cape May, you really realize what a big protector you have on your side. After we got back dockside, and counted our catch we found We.]jpd 24 nice weakies, 2 flounder, and 2 snapper blues-Jerry Jerabek hung the big flounder right in the middle of a weakfish flurry, which I forgot to mention. Most of the fleet were still pulling fish when we left, so there’s no doubt at this writing that the hot spot right now is Hereford Inlet - our fall season has started - get out

there whenever you can - it might last two days or it could stay hot for twp weeks... Last minute news flash — Bob Neely was in Wednesday, and said that he was out on Frank Campanell’s boat in Hereford, and loaded a box with big weakfish- he said they also returned a lot of big blues, because they were fishing fon*weakfish, Mullet are emptying out of the .inlet, and drawing the big blues in close to the beach, so it's a mixed bag in the Ocean. Oh, yes, before I forget the other angler on the boat was Ralph Whyno, of the Villas.
