By Charles P. Lamey ■
Although The Kinks have never stopped recording or touring, they've returned to the masses with their new album. "Low Budget" (Arista). As the title indicates, it's not one of their incredibly intense concept albums, which The Kinks have become known for. but, instead, a collection of simple, straight-forward rock and roll tunes. The sound of "Low Budget" is stark, yet clean, with Dave Davies playing his most inspired guitar ever and Mick Avory proving, once and for all, he’s the perfect drummer for this bank. Like Charlie Watts of The Rolling Stones, Avory is dependable, as he doesn’t try to be flashy or steal the show. He's just always on beat. But, mention The Kinks and one has to deal with lead vocalist and songwriter Ray Davies. Writing tunes that borrow equally as much from music halls as vintage rock and roll and writing
humanistic lyrics, Davies is a master storyteller. Never becoming one of rock’s elite superstars has enabled him to be convincing when writing about the problems of average working people. Social conditions have always irked Ray Davies, and consequently, his songs become, thanks to his messages being sung in a warm, compassionate voice, an emotional ex- % perience. With "A Gallon Of Gas” getting airplay and "Low Budget" riding high in the top-twenty, it’s safe to say The Kinks are secure, again. I hope you'll try to catch up with their last couple of years, because The Kinks have consistently released excellent records. It’s about time they were listened to. A bit of a disappointment is Wings’ "Back To The Egg” (Columbia). Paul McCartney can still chum out a delightful pop tune, but he can also be so corny
it’s nauseating. This has its moments of sheer brilliance, but, mostly, it’s uneven pop music. Seemingly from nowhere. The C ars dipped straight to the top of the charts last year with a fine debut album. “Candy-O" (Ejektra) might take a couple of extra spins to fully comprehend, but after awhile, it comes off as being the perfect follow-up. Their quirky melodies and strong vocals are their main appeal, as The Cars are 'ortunate enough to be progressive, yet remain commercial. The 80’s should be good for The
Cars.
